Does anyone remember the old Herters Improved Bowie? Their catalog was pretty neat, and had lot`s of good reading in it. One thing George Herter was sure good at was advertising, everything he sold was "the best", according to him. From duck calls, to guns, (anyone remember the 401 Herter`s Powermag?), to knives, nothing else compared to his. I came across an original, and decided to make my own version of the Herters Improved Bowie.

Here is an original Improved Bowie I stumbled across a few years ago in a small resale shop, along with a Herters duck call, and a book written by George Herter.

Here is my version of the Improved Bowie. It`s specs are the same as the original. The handle is walnut.

Here are the original and mine together.

Very cool, I like your convex on this one and your handle looks way more comfortable to me.

Here it is after rounding the handle and applying the oil finish to the handle.

Nice work on reproducing it came out good. It's funny a couple of months ago I was contacted by a guy who wanted me to make one to match the one that he had as a kid. He wanted me to forge it and match it as close as I could. I left the handle pretty squared and he was very happy with it. I like the modern contours you gave the handle. -Burton

Hi all,

I just found this old thread during a Google search of Herter's Improved Bowie Knife. That is a beautiful version of the original Herter's JK. Today was
(Opening Day) for "Yard Sale" season here in Maine. I found an old (slightly rusty) Carbon Knife with beautiful condition (three rivet wood handle) and a (just a tad over) 5" blade. I paid an entire fifty cents for the knife. Afterwards, upon close examination, I discover it is an original Herter's Improved Bowie!
It cleaned up BEAUTIFULLY! A darn nice old knife for fifty cents! A keeper for sure.

Regards,
HARDBALL
