Improved Mora Sheaths

I just received two Mora (stainless)knives that I plan to use for my larger bug-out/survival kit. I am extremely pleased with the quality/price ratio of these (I can purchase 4-5 of these for the price of one Cold Steel SRK)and they suit my purposes perfectly.

However, the sheaths that came with these don't seem to have any means of keeping the knife secure in it. The only thng keeping the knife in the sheath is gravity; in an emergncy survival situation I would like to be able to strap the knife to my person and keep it with me until the sitution improved. But it seems vigorous activity might cause the knife to fall out of the sheath.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them and their Mora? I ws thinkin of glueing a velcro strap to the opening but don't know what type of permanant waterproof adhesive to use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I find that the Frosts Mora sheaths are terrible for retention. The Eriksson Mora sheaths are far superior....

The sheath on my Frosts Swedish Army knife holds it tight, can be worn upside down...some of the Frosts Sloyd knife sheaths are high topped, but only use gravity retention.

You don't see it as often now, but my older Scandinavian knives had a brass stud on the end of the handle, this fit into a slitted notch cut into a keeperstrap of leather that was attached to the back of the sheath. Held the knife in until you pulled the leather strap up. You can use the existing plastic sheath, wrap it in suede or thin vegetable tan leather to make a dangler or neck sheath, add a screw or something similar to the end of the wooden handle to serve as the stud, add a 1" wide leather keeper strap to the back of the sheath to hold the screw/tab down.

If you look thru the knives for sale at Ragnar's Ragweed Forge you'll see a few Brusoletto knives with the stud and keeperstrap arrangement like this, the Troll, Profileringskniv, Granbit, Jeger'n, & Telemark all show handle studs and the leather keeper strap. There's some info there on making sheaths and Ragnar sells a good book on making Scandinavian knives, more info in there on making sheaths for same.
Good luck!

If you are talking about the wood handled Mora with plastic sheath mine all split from knife insertion pressure, so I fix them with tape. Why not put a cord on the sheath and wear it under your shirt as a neck knife? Keeps the sheath upright.

For the plastic handled Mora I have never split the sheath but would suggest adding your own snap closure; or para-cord if in a pinch.

Did someone mention Mora neck sheath? :) This is my "no sew" sheath, made from a single piece of leather folded back on itself and slipped between 3 slits cut in the leather. I cut the bottom part of the Mora plastic sheath and used it to line the bottom of the sheath.

Hey Hoodoo..:)

Thanks for the tips everyone. I still haven't decided on how to secure the knife in the sheath yet:

The handle is plastic, so putting some type of stud in it then "fastening" the knife with a leather strap would be tricky.

The Mora is little too 'bulky' for me to wear as a neck knife.

And Normark...I purchased these Moras because they were intended for BOBs for loved ones. Not that you're pricey or anything, but I do need to keep these as cheap as possible. I'll probably try to stick with the original sheath(s).

I think my best bet for now would be to put some type of strap across the sheath where knife's finger choil comes out. But I haven't yet figured out how to fasten this strap to the sheath(rivets, glue)?

Sorry to be so long-winded. Again, I am extemely appreciative to eveyne thats responded.

I haven't tried this myself, but some of the Sami-type blades are supposed to have very serious sheathes. At Ragweed's place, that would be some of the Finnish blades, and the Karesuando blades from northern Sweden. Tell Ragweed what your criteria are and he'll make an appropriate suggestion.

Hey Normark--have you ever thought of making a big batch of Mora-fitting sheathes? Maybe you and Ragweed could go in on this together--or just throw in a free Mora knife with its custom sheath! :)
