Improving Mora handle (hard plastic)

Does anyone have any ideas/tips for improving the "grippiness" of a hard plastic handled Mora (760/780 type).

I've tried some hockey tape, it worked okay, but not great. I tried roughing up the handle with some 60 grit sand paper, definitely didn't help. I am thinking maybe a thin spray of plastidip might do the trick. I've always liked kind of rubbery handles (like my SRK, which I unfortunately lost, had).

Thanks in advance for the help.

I was going to suggest hockey tape.

I wonder if you could remove some of the thickness of the handle and possibly 550 wrap it?

Also, what about that latex style dip that people use on tools? I cant remember the name of it. Dad kept some if around his shop.

You dip the handles of tools in it, coats them, and dries pretty durable. I dipped a few hammer handle and adjustable wrech handles in some about 15 years ago, and its still on there. For the life of me, I cant remember the actual name, but its a wet latex style dip. Lots of different colors avalible.

One thing I've done with some plastic handled knives is to use a checkering file to cut grooves epecially where your thumb holds it. I got that idea after my habit of checkering the front and back straps of all my pistols .It makes a big difference.

That would be plastidip, which is one of the ideas I mentioned.

Have you tried golf club wrap? Seen it and tennis racket grip in the sporting goods section at WalMart.

There's also a rubber tape used by electricians for sealing connections. It stretches and grips to itself as you wrap it on...if you want to remove it, it comes off clean. I've used it on two machetes and hammer handles.

What coldwood said, only I found it in the plumbing section. I find it the perfect tackiness, I am buying 10 rolls of it next time I make it to wally mart.

how about Rhino spray? But honestly unless you wear gloves, you'll get hot spots using a knife that is too rough for any extended period of time.

You could use plastidip, but use the DIP, NOT the spray. The spray sucks, but the dip is Awesome!

Or you could do what I did first, and cordwrap the handle with 550 paracord. Best modification I ever did! And if you don't like it, you can take it off easily, then try your plastidip, just make sure you use the dip and not the spray.

I've never tried this, but I read where you can get a bicycle tire inner tube, cut off a section that is as long as your handle and slide this tube section over the handle. You get an instant rubberized handle. Be sure to get the smallest diameter inner tube you can so that it slides on tight to the handle. I think the advantage of this is that you can take the rubber off and clean the handle whenever you like.

I would try what Stingray and Midnight Scout said first, then go to plastic dip if you weren;t satisfied. If you wrap with 550, you might try pulling out the inner strands, thereby getting a flatter wrap that will stay put yet not increase the handle size too much.

I kindly like the 760 the way it is, but that's just me ((( :D )))

Gorilla tape. I've used it over 550 on a bushman. Works great!

If you search my posts you might find a mini torture test on a Mora. I put some pics on there I think where I use a bicycle inner tube as described above. I did it for the same reasons you cited. My local bike shop gave me an old one for free. It doesn't look cool but it works great. I also read where rubber burns pretty well with a lighter so I guess it is a fire starter too, although I admit I forgot to try this.

I really liked the bulk the 550 paracord added to the handle, really fills my hand well. Of course, you can always remove the inner strands if you don't like the bulk, as StretchNM suggested.

MRPink, that's a fine new acquisition! I like the design, resembles one I just finished for my wife.

You could try using spray on truck bed liner. It is avaliable at any auto parts store (I work at one, so I should know) for around $10. I use it for the foot pegs on my ATV, it made them grip better and it is tough stuff. It isn't very aggressive, but it has a nice grip to it. I might try it on my mora.

Wouldn't wrapping paracord around a knife tang (with no handle) cause the tang to rust if exposed to water or blood, as most outdoor knives are, if it's not first taped or protected in some way?

Coldwood and Liam Ryan-- Do you know the name of the tape you mentioned, or some way to make sure I get the right kind?

Thanks--
