OK heres the scenario, You somehow find yourself in nowhere land. A train wreck or some other disaster that left you in the middle of an unpopulated area. How would you care for your 0-1 or similar high carbon steel knife. The tropics or jungle I guess would be very different in resourses than the woods but what would you use from the environement to care for it? No tuff Cloth or wd40.

Well, you could trap some wild game. You'de probably need to for food anyway. And in the process of skinning the animals you could remove the fat from the skin. Not quite sure how you'de prepare the fat, but I know the oil in it would be good for protecting your steel.

Seems to me that in the sort of situation you describe, a little rust is the least of my worries.

The most important thing you could do would be to keep your steel dry.

Like what's been said, keep it dry,you could utilize animal fat.The easiest solution is carry stainless instead of o-1 steel.Later,RS

I don't have any knives made from 0-1, however, I do of other steels such as, Damascus, 5160, 52100 and I just would keep them dry and I don't think they would rust. Carbon blades don't rust just looking at them!

Fat is not oil. Fat contains a lot of water. You could boil the fat to remove the water and be left with a dry oil. But, my guess is that the oil from boiled animal fat will oxidize and go bad on your blade rather quickly.

The question that occures to me is this: how long do you expect to be in this survival mode? If you expect to rejoin civilization within a month or so, just keep the knife clean and dry and any bits of rust that do develope shouldn't be serious enough to jepardize the knife.

Hey, guys,

We chatted this topic up a bit in the Himalyan Imports forum -- the info on improv maintenance can apply to many knives. Also mentioned are other threads in that forum on wet sheaths and wet khukuris -- you can search on those threads, too. But the main stuff is here:

Peace,

Brian.

PS It's funny that this came up in the HI and General forums, rather than our little ol' Wilderness Forum. Check us out under tactics and training!

A knife you're using never rusts ... kind of like a watched pot never boils.... Seriously, have you ever found rust on a knife you're using every day? I never have. I have a habit of wiping the blade on my pants before resheathing, and that might have something to do with it.

Bear grease used to be considered good for everything, boots, knives, guns, ... the mountain men were famous for smelling of bear grease. I got hold of some once ... it's pretty smelly.
