Improvised Becker Handle

Hey guys,

I was recently doing some training in the field that involved a lot of improvising. That, and a thread I was reading about cord wrapped handles got me thinking...

How well could you improvise a handle for your becker while in the field?

I don't just mean taking the scales off your favorite becker and then wrapping it in cord. I'm talking about real handles. For example lets say your grivory handles break in the plane crash that stranded you. (I'm not trying to say anything about the grivory scales.) What do you do?

Or an even worse scenario. While I was out in the field, a friend of mine was processing firewood when his knife broke where the blade meets the tang. (It wasn't a becker.) Luckily we were in groups so he had other knives to borrow. But what if he didn't, how would you impro a handle for that?

I am out of town for training and don't have my BK2, so I can't try this myself. I am interested to see what ya'll think.

So here is the challenge: Take your favorite becker and impro a handle for it using what you could reasonably find in the field. Take pics and let us know what you learn.

Drilling the holes would be the hardest part, depending on what tools you happened to have with you, IMO. But this sort of thing is why I prefer to use those phillips/flat screws for removable scales. Easy to remove those in the field, and screw on a new set of handles.

add a few small sticks to the sides of the blade and wrap it up in paracord. would be easy enough... and I'm never without at least 100' of cord. Usually more like 300foot because I made a paracord belt with a buckle strap out of 200 feet. It's intended to be used as a shoulder sling for the large nalgene bottle in case of emergency... but can be used for holding anything really... and can easily be unraveled to provide copious amounts of usable cordage.

I may not even need to add sticks, i just thought might be nice to provide a little more girth... maybe even just wrap a sock around it before the cord.

I don't see why this wouldn't be an option. Seems like the best 'improvised' method to me. Fast and efficient. If I didn't have cordage for some reason... I guess I could try to widdle some... could probably drill the whole with the leather punch on my leatherman.... seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth though.

maybe even just wrap a sock around it before the cord.

I think that right there is one of the best ways you could do it in an emergency!! You could pretty much slide the skeletonized handle into your sock and bunch it up near the top towards the blade (use both your socks for extra comfort) and maybe tie a bit of natural cordage over it at the top and bottom of the handle to keep the socks from moving around too much.

Duct tape

Honestly, I am going to go with a cord wrap. If it was really broken, I would mount what's left of the blade in a short stick like a spear point.

Since my first aid kit is just a roll of duct tape, i think i would borrow some for my new handle

Oh, I didn't even think of that. I keep a full roll of 1" gorilla tape in my pack as well. maybe a couple wraps of cord and a couple layers of tape... would probably be quite ergonomic..

However, this whole thread is one big farce, because who is out there beating on a Becker hard enough to break it and still has the grivory scales on it? I've got the micarta on all of mine! ;)
