Improvised Guard on Fixed Blade

Forgive me if this has been discussed before. How can one attach some kind of guard on an existing fixed blade? Mostly concerned with bottom. Can one fit some kind of washer like rubber or plastic over the blade and somehow affix, or are there some better ideas?

depends on the style of knife, how much work you're wantin to do, and the way it's made. if it's a particular knife you're talkin about, could you post a pic?
