I had a couple dings in my Izula that where bugging me .
I picked up my pet rock that my little girl made a few weeks back and took the dings out .
That led tome spending a hour or so looking for a thread I saw not long ago about is it possible to use a rock to sharpen a knife with .
I failed but I found some good reads in older threads .

soo , behold my abused pet rock :) ( actually I think it liked it )

The knife has a nice edge , thanks to the pet rock , that shaves very well and is not noticeably toothy . Its as good as my regular stone as far as I can tell .

Just wanted to throw it out there , it is very easily doable to use a regular rock to touch up and sharpen to a shaving edge on a knife .

I do want to toss in tho , about that bear gryls guy who bashed off some rock chunks , laid then on a stick , ground the crap out of the side of his knife and said yeah good , as way of demonstrating to the TV public how to do it ...dont do that .. really , dont .. thats not so great a way to do it .

Were you drinking that tequila during the process? LOL! In any case it is good to see a knife that is clearly used.

Rocks work.... choose fine grained ones and preferrably hard ones. Afterall, the infamous Arkansas stones are in fact cut rock from quarries.

Glad your pet rock came to the rescue.

I didn't even know you can get results like that from a river rock. I have a carbon steel altoid tin knives that needs to be sharpened. I might try to use a river rock for the heck of it and see what results you can get. Also arkansas stones are made of novaculite which have a high silica content which cuts the steel and will probably cut a lot better than the average river rock.

It was easier than I thought it would be .
I used the rock I did because initially I thought it was too smooth to take metal off , and I was intending to just "steel" the dings back to where they sposed to be .
I saw the grey on the rock where it took metal off , and it was kind of natural progression from there .. raised a bur , took it off , have sweet edge :)
I would have preferred a bigger rock , this one had me kinda scared for my fingers and very very aware of what I was doing .
Lesson learned , smooth feeling rocks are not always smooth when steel is concerned
