I was messing around with an old id badge holder with a reel, you office people know what I'm talking about and you fisherman, they're the little reel that clips to your fishing best and have your little nippers clipped on them for nipping your fishing line.

Always looking alternative uses for mundane objects while playing with the badge holder it would make an interesting compact automatic snare, it has the advantage of having a preload so when the animal troops the snare it sets automatically, also if there's no tree/sapling to pull the wire when tripped the preloaded reel will quickly take up the slack setting the snare.

Also I can see where this would come in handy leaving an unattended line in the water so it would set the hook giving you better odds of getting something.

This is a small compact little wonder that if you messed around a little I think you could come up with all kinds of uses.

It probably holds more line than it comes with, I'm sure it could hold fishing line, dental floss he'll even the line it comes with is pretty strong and about 3 1/2' long.

What do ya guys think handy or not, worth throwing one in the BOB?

Darn thing are cheap if not free, can't go wrong there.

Any body got any other ideas on what weeks they're good for?

Not trying to catch a mountain lion, squirrel, something small, the line on mine is pretty strong I'd say 30# test, I've had one I had to replace the string a long time ago, IIRC it wasn't hard.

Again, I've never tried it but it would be interesting to see ,I might have to host a giveaway to get some people to try this.

In the mean time, I appreciate any thoughts and feedback on the idea,WFC, test yours, unless it's dry rotted I think you'll be surprised, keep in mind they're designed to take thousands of pulls and retraction, personally I think it's a handy thing to carry. It's most likely you have one on you now.

All ya have to do is take off the plastic keeper and just use the triangular metal part to pass the string through to make the opening for the snare. I'm definitely gonna hafta try this when it's a little nicer out.

Why do you need a device to close a snare loop? A proper snare does that just fine all on its own.

Just a thought, I'm always looking for other uses for things I might find in my pockets so I just thought I'd throw it out there.
