I found another steel imperfection in an axe bit, and I got wondering how many of you have seen these?

It's a ripple in the steel and the shriek of a file skating where it used to bite. After filing around, it's a nugget that has to be ground out. I found one in a cruiser before, and now have another in a newer Collins. Both of questionable quality but hard temper.

(Pic attempt).

I guess the big companies had rookies on staff from time to time and I suppose that hangover Mondays came around every now and then too!

I've had that "nugget" thing before. One was really big and bad on a Trumpeter made in W. Germany. I had a much smaller one on...I think a Collins if I recall correctly. The Trumpeter ruined a beautiful, old Simonds file. My fault, I shouldn't have just kept bearing down on it. I finally took it down with a belt sander.
