Some of you may or may not be familiar with Mickey Newbury. He was the foremost songwriter in Nashville in the late 60s and 70s. In the song, "Lukenbach, Texas", he was the one referred to in the line, "Newbury Train Songs". He was also the one to arrange the song "American Trilogy" (Dixie, Battle Hymn and All My Trials) that Elvis closed his shows with. Over 500 of his songs have been covered by other artists.

Like any other RR spike knife, it is more of a novelty than a working knife.

This knife was forged from a railroad spike from Guthrie, Kentucky, the setting of one of his many train songs entitled, "Cortelia Clark" and was a collaborative effort of two different makers.

The brass plate is inscribed with a line from that song, "A blind old man and I we came to Guthrie just to see the train. He was black and I was green."

It was made exclusively for the 2004 Gathering of Mickey Newbury's family and friends in Austin, Texas and will be auctioned.

I'm new to knives (but even to the uneducated, that knife is awesome). On the other hand, I'm a music addict (born and raised in Nashville, till I joined the Navy 21 years ago)

Mickey Newbury ranks with Guy Clark, Towns Van Zant and Emmylou Harris as far as being an underappreciated artist....

I've been listening to the CD "Nights when I am sane" all this past weekend. The title track is particularly haunting. First time I heard it, my jaw dropped to the ground. I think this album is a must have for every music afficionado's collection.
Nice knife by the way! ;)

Update...
The knife was well received and ironically, a collector was attending for the 3 days and very pleased to have gotten the knife at the silent auction.

If anyone is interested, some of the performers were:

Cowboy Johnson (listen to him today at Willie's 4th of July picnic at http://www.smn.com/) He is playing at 12:40 with Marie Rhines accompanying him on fiddle.

Marie Rhines - Sedona
Kacey Jones - Nashville
Jonmark Stone - South Carolina
Mike Beck - California
Elton Noel - Kentucky
Jason Stone - Tucson
Doug Lang - Vancouver
Laura Newbury
Susan Newbury
Andrew Polk - Missouri
Albert & Gage - Austin
Egbert Meyers - Netherlands
Ernie Bunch - Cave Creek
Jimmie Mac - US
Chris Fraser - Australia
Butch Morgan - US

Some really great music for all three days. If anyone is interested in attending next year, let me know. It is great bunch of folks.
