What knife would you want to have with you if you chose to amputate your own arm? :D It couldn't be a heavy swinging weapon, because one arm isn't very far away from the other. I'd probably chose this:

By the way this isn't meant to be insensitive to that guy in Utah, I don't mean to offend anyone.

The smallest friggin', dullest knife knife possible, in order to give me time to come to my senses, and not cut my own arm off.

You'd rather be pinned under a boulder until you die of thirst?

Out of all of the knives in my collection, I would want my Leatherman Wave. Cutting through the flesh and muscle would be the easy part, but try cutting bone with a plain edge or serrated knife. I think that the saw on the Wave would make short work of the bone.

I think sawing through bone would hurt like hell! Even with the arm tied off, I think it would hurt less to break the bone.

I just sawed my pinky in half 3 weeks ago the pain is still very fresh in my mind, do you realize how much it hurts to cut through your own extremities?

Secondly, I wouldn't be hiking alone, let alone without someone knowing where I was, and it wouldn't be 4 days of missed work that would trigger a search party.

I give the man credit, but how many people think they could actually sever their own limb?

Personally, I know my limitations and I couldn't do it.

Somewhat off-topic for a moment, and maybe I'm going to ruffle some feathers saying this ... but living in Colorado, I'm beginning to get more than mildly annoyed with the incessant "news" reporting about Aron Ralston (the guy who amputated his arm.) As I see it, Ralston is a reckless risk-taker. He was caught in a avalanche back in February, and hadn't advised anyone of where he was hiking this time.

The media holding Ralston out as some kind of courageous, skilled outdoorsman, or even a hero, is a gross misrepresentation. Whatever outdoor skills he may have are obviously rendered of far less value because of his lack of good judgement.

So, as to your question ... well, first off, before I decided what knife I wanted to have with me in case I needed to perform self-surgery, I'd tell somebody where I was going. If possible, I'd photocopy my detailed trail map of the area and mark my intended hike for them. I'd take appropriate survival gear, flares, blankets, etc. and more than adequate water and nourishment. Personally, I would choose to have a firearm with me. And I'd have a good fixed-blade knife, of course -- one suitable for the usual wilderness and camping chores you might run into, and which I could use in pinch for ... well, something far more grim. And I'd hope that my proper planning would make it unnecessary for me leave a part of my precious body behind.

Sorry about the rant. I feel better now, with that off my chest.

As far as I am concerned, the guy cutting off his arm is a damn good argument against rock climbing by yourself!!! I would rather just have my knife so I can mundane things like trim rope.

There is the voice of experience, who goes off half cocked hiking?

I would NEVER sever my own arm. For one thing, I don't think I could bring myself to do it...for another I think I would probably hold out hope that my arm could be saved when a rescue party finally did stuble upon me. I value my extremities far too much to slice them off myself. If I did have to do it though, I think pretty much any reasonably sharp knife would do. It could probably even be accomplished with an SAK as long as you cut through a joint instead of through bone, there all you have to do is sever skin, muscle, tendons, and ligaments instead of haveing work you way through very strong bone.

Couldn't and wouldn't ever do it. Ever. If my arm was numb and in shock, maybe, but only maybe. Im suprised he didnt bleed to death when he hiked out after rappeling down the rest of the way. I hope no one sees this man as a hero because he's not. The only thing he is is a person crazy enough to cut their own arm off. Goddamn. Can you imagine the sound, sensation, and sight of your own arm cutting through the bone attached to their shoulder. AAAAA, Never. I think he just cut through the broken bone because if all he had was a pocketr knife, he would have had to sit there and whittle away at his own arm. yet another harrowing thought.

Oh, and I wonder how many times he passed out during the "operation?"

Looking over my knife-log, it looks like it would either be my Becker BK-7, (or my BK-9 if I had to hack my arm off in a hurry)...If a folder was all I had, I'd choose either my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande or 5" Gunsite.

I wonder if he went back to get the remains of his arm??? I would use my forearm bone and have a bunch of stuff made out of it like a knife handle or scales if possible and some other cool stuff like have a shot glass hollowed out of a chunk of it.

I have been trying hard not to think about this but since i get a choice of knife, I would want a custom small fixed blade that cost at least $10,000 so then I could tell my wife see it wasn't a waste of money.

Wait a second...if the boulder or whatever was on his arm was that heavy..the bone would be crushed, technically all he cut was dead muscle tissue then..and although the pain would be incredible, it would be miniscule compared to the agony of your arm being crushed. Your arm would be numb all the way up to shoulders at least so (additional) pain would not be as big of an issue as the shock from the 'omg im cutting off my own arm'

Well.., it would have to be (a) A knife I like..., and (b)..., accompanied by spirits...so the knife shown below would be my choice (after the Tequila was gone)....
