JeeZ! You guys are a horrible influence on me! You fellas spark a greedy urge beneath my skin to collect these awesome knives. I have a HEST, an Izula and scales on the way and now I'm torn on what else I need. I have been thinking about an RC 3 or 4 to give to my dad (once I thoroughly handle it) as a great EDC/hunting tool. I really want to get one of the big boys, but I think I will have to wait and see what everyone else thinks of the JUNGLAS vs RC6 before I make the big step to the BIG boy knives. Any sound advice on a present for the old man, ESEE 4 or 3? At the moment I am leaning towards the ESEE 3 because my dad has never carried a fixed blade before and it would seem like an easy transition. Since the HEST and 3 are similar it might also be easier to give him a 3 and not be a greedy bastard son and hold onto the 4 :D

Threes are great. Warning though, they are more addictive than izulas. I want lots of them for some weird reason.

If it can't be done with an RC-5, you don't need to do it. No seriously, you will be happy with ANY ESEE you decide to get. They are all great knives, although I passed on the HEST.

An ESEE would be one heck of a present to your Dad.

Good luck man.

This. I have one Izula, but am wanting a 3MIL to keep around. :D

For a hunting and possible EDC, I would pick the 3 over my beloved 4. Just a little smaller for ease of carry and it will serve well as a hunting knife.

I showed RC/ESEE knives to my dad back in October I think it was, we both got hooked and neither of us could decide between the 3 and 4. For our use, we both picked the 4 and sent the 3 back. Couple months later, we both had 3s....and Izulas. Oops. :D

Get the 6 in the ESEE/RAT pack kit.
order it from the ESEE website, doesn't cost much more than the Junglas, and you get sharpening steel, fire kit, the big pouch for gear, etc...
just think of the 6 as your gradual transition to the "big boy knife". :D

No love for canadian once again... The RAT pack kit isn't essential, i already have something similar "homemade" .. my small survival kit.. but this rat pack is sexy and i would have bought it anyway. And i already have my RC5 plain, so i would have bought a 4th esee knife (an RC6) to get my hand on the sexy lookin kit. Thats is the true definition of esee addiction.. where is my Rat Pack number ?? :)

oh well .. i was born in Canada, its my parents fault!

IMHO, the RC-3 would be the better choice as it is suited more for general purpose/every day carry.

I need

1) a small carry neck knife/EDC knife (Izula, RC3) concealable
2) a bigger knife for heavy duty work (RC5 without a doubt, 1/4 thickness kick arse.. it feel like a tank in my hand)
3) a golok/khukri/machete style chopper (where is my junglas??)

If you choose an RC3/izula for a EDC, i dont see the point of an RC4 (Instead of buying an RC4, I would naturally go for the RC5). I went for an RC3mil plain personally for the small knife.

That is my 2cents worth, you dont have to agree :)

Suck it up and get two 3's. Get your dad a plain one and treat yourself to a Mil version. Or, remember that the man gave you life and give him the Mil and you keep the plain.

Hah, thanks for the advice. The craziest thing is every other night I fall for a different knife.

Hell, you're from Canada and you don't even capitalize the name of your own country. . .how much love are other folks supposed to have???

:p

Seriously, foreigners can call ESEE and they will ship international. I think Jeff posted that 6 or 7 times. It avoids the problems with automated orders, etc.

Although it might not apply to you, being from Montreal and all .. .. .;)

Agreed mate, it's just the needs/wants bit I struggle with...:D

I couldn't guess how many times I went through every page on the RAT/ESSE photos thread before I made a decision.

I started out with the Izula while I was making up my mind on the other :D

Then I got the 4 next. I think those two make a great pair for going to the woods.

I added the 3 next.

You will have to get your hands on them to see what you like best.

Get the old man an rc-3 in whatever configuration he will like
You said he has never had a fixed blade so he is used to sharp slicing slippies and lockbacks. He will probably not like the rc-4's edge profile because of this if you think about it.
my 2 cents

Sorry, but my vote for a "best first" is an RC4.

I love my RC5, but it's certainly not for everyone...
The Izula is a great blade (mine is in the mail!) but it, too, is not for everyone, either.
