In mixed company....

That's a pretty good representation of each category. Although for the G rated I would go with a small multi tool or small slip joint.

I usually have 2 knives on me, one small keychain knife (usually a Spyderco LadyBug or a Jester) to use when I don't know how people will react, and a larger knife for use when I am with friends/people who won't mind.

Wait enough and someone will promptly point out that the less scary knife they own has a close resemblance to your 3rd option... and then will come ZT, HTM, Hinderer, Strider, etc....

I think that any Opinel, SAK (red and no one hand opening, please) or buck 110 equivalent will never scare people...

Good post.

From top to bottom G(schrade 108ot, case 6327, buck 503), PG(kershaw energ, buck vantage pro, schrade 194ot), and PG13(buck 110 2dot, crkt m16). I never got into tactical blacked out oversized R rated pocket knives.

I would say number 3 is pg13. There are far scarier looking knives than a green/black grip. Like a zt0301.

I don't usually go backpaking in the strict meaning of the word. I steer more to climbing (sport or alpine), winter mountaineering and such. I am usually well above tree line so I only have to worry about opening packages of food, cutting the food itself and the ocassional rope, webbing cutting. I usually have a single blade folder in my pocket (Spyderco Rescue) and a SAK in the backpack. If I am cutting weight and going for a multiday climb I skip the SAK and swap the Rescue for a Centofante III (ligther and better all arround knife).

I do own several fixed blades (bought and made by myself) and sometimes I take them with be when we make BBQs and stuff like that.

I got this to carry:

I do carry my Kershaw Leek or CRKT Point Guard along w/my SAK Classic almost every day, unless I'm flying somewhere and only taking carry on luggage.

I never considered political correctness with regard to my EDC. I'm a reminder that things aren't nice, and they have no right to feel comfortable at the sight of others.

I carry whatever I want and don't care what other people believe in but with that being said I hate attention being drawn to me so if I have a modern blade on me especially an assisted one I will open it discretely using two hands holding the knife close to my body so it's not blatantly obvious that I have a knife out.

That bad boy is leaning towards X with these rating systems!
But really it is hard sometimes to remember some people out there are not me, and it sounds rude but I would call them weenies. Truly though, we all really do need those pg knives, or at least pg13. I often use my R rated blades half way open griping the blade, or really chocked up on the handle so it looks like a tool, not a "weapon".

I carry a SAK with the well-recognized red cellidor handles. Haven't yet run into a case where anyone was visibly concerned over that one. Multi-tools and traditionals also seem to fall into that category. As for any one-handed opener, from a Dragonfly to a ZT 0301, all bets are off. That's just my experience... Others' may vary.

A gentleman handling a "rated R" knife isn't as scary as a show off with a "rated G" knife. just my 2 cents.

you can't really beat the SAK if you really need it to blend in though.

No, the legality is all I concern myself when I carry a knife. If it's legal to carry and I feel like carrying it, I'll carry it. What other people think about my knife doesn't really concern me.

Had this the first of the week;

So, Triple X, R, and G?

Last two days has been the same, but the SR-1 was replaced with my BM Adamas, but I guess that still gets a R rating!

Btw, Triple X and G ride in my fanny pack, while R goes in my right front pocket.

Thinking about this setup for tomorrow and the weekend;

Bottom line though is that the Victorinox Fieldmaster is all I really have a need for, but it sure is fun to carry the other's anyway!!:D
