I need advice on the best sized knife to compliment my 4in t2 ranger for when i go backpacking.

hmmm...whatever suits your fancy for whatever you will be doing when you are backpacking ;) A nice little slipjoint always works just fine for me. Only reason I carry a smaller knife in the woods is so I will have something to use if I lose my big one

You got a small blade so now you need a big one, RC-6, bravo2, BK9?

Depends on what your wanting to do.

My main using blade is generaly a 5"er. I also often take alonga kukri which fills the Hatchet/axe role for me. This enable me to split some wood and build a shelter more easily if needed.

I always have a slipjoint along as well. For all the little stuff.

Everyone's tastes are different. A 4" blade would be my big knife. A SAK Farmer is a handy addition. No need for anything bigger and heavier.

I always carry a “camp” knife when camping,

…backpacking I tend to limit myself to 7” max.

These are a few of my 7” Camp Knives:

Well, as others have said, what you need depends on your intended tasks. I would prefer for myself either a small traditional fixed blade like a Schrade Sharpfinger, or a more modern "minimalist" knife design like a Becker Necker (or RAT Izula). The Sharpfinger might get in the way of your pack's waist belt if worn that way, as might a neck knife if worn around your neck (and I hate putting anything around my neck anyway). Both styles are adaptable to attachment to a packstrap though, for quick access and unobtrusive carry.

Where I live and hike (here in the S.E. U.S.), I don't find the need for the added bulk and weight of full size sheath knives. I just don't encounter that many tasks with my hiking/camping style and environment that require a large blade, and I don't engage in many knife related "playtime activities" that call for a large blade.

In the end, it boils down more to what suits your personal likes and needs. The two smaller knife patterns I have mentioned are inexpensive to acquire so that if it turns out that your interests and experiences lead you to want a larger blade, you haven't lost much of an investment.

I would pick one that compliments rather than duplicates. A SAK, MT, or a larger chopper. Not specifically a knife, but a machete, hatchet/small axe, or saw would be good choices, depending on your environment or intended uses.
