I been looking for a everyday use folding knife that you can whittle with and cut rope with. I looked at the
KaBar dozier is this a worthy knife ? Or do you recommend a different folding knife ?
Budget: $20

The KaBar Dozier is a modern design. (one-hand opening and has pocket clip.)

Since we only talk about old timey pocket knife designs in the Traditional Forum, I'm going to move this to General Forum, where folks talk about one hand opening knives all the time, and the KaBar Dozier is considered a very good knife for the price.

Yeah the dozer is good for the price. You can get alot of different kershaws for under $20. Opinel and svord peasant knives are good non locking options you can get for next to nothing.

Yep, the KaBar Dozier is a good choice in this price range...

If I had $20-ish to get a knife, I'd get one. Others I'd look at include:

Any of a host of Opinel models... they whittle and cut rope just fine.
Byrd Cara Cara
Byrd Meadowlark
Buck Bucklite Max
Buck Bantam
CRKT Crawford Kasper
CRKT Journeyer
CRKT Drifter
Gerber LST
Gerber EVO
Kershaw Shuffle
Kershaw Cryo... I'll just stop at "K"

None of these are premium stuff, but can get the job done for a 20-spot.

Hard to beat the Kabar Dozier for the price as far as I'm concerned. I pick one up periodically and eventually give them away to a deserving young lad who might be using some really poor piece of crap knife.

You know S.H.Bushcraft, you can always check out any of the knife websites around and they have a search filter for prices. I use this if i need to burn a little more cash for free shipping or to use up a gift card.

Got my nephew a CRKT Carson flipper for Xmas.
Really nice knife for 20 bucks 👍

this would be my choice , at around 20 bucks, you get a lot of bang for your buck, including Sandvik stainless and Kershaw's thick teflon smooth stonewash

Add an extra $4 to your budget and you can have an Ontario RAT, which is probably the most recommended budget knife out there.

While the Dozier is a great $20 knife, bang for your buck, you're obviously on a tight budget, so I'm going to suggest a different route, which will excel at whittling and all other tasks, for a friendly budget.

Instead of a single locking folder to max your tight budget,
A Mora Companion + a Rough Rider Congress knife combined for about $25-30, gives you a great affordable fixed blade, which is great for wood carving, especially long hard cuts, +4 different smaller blades to excel at finer detail work.

Rough Rider makes decent "cheap" slip joints with good snap, and decent steel for the price, so 5 blades for the price of 1, a traditional pocket folder + a decent Scandi ground fixed blade, both edc friendly, is by far the best bang for your buck imo.
With those two in tandem, tackling all your edc chores, save up another $20 for a dozier or whatever.

*(add in a cheap sharpener like a fine pocket stone for touch ups).

I'd go with a case sodbuster Jr ,a Victorinox recruit, buck bantam, or medium bucklite max.
The dozier might be a decent knife, If buck can make the bantams or the bucklite max in America and sell them for 20$ then ka-bar has no excuse not to make the dozier in America and offer them for under 30$.

If you can spring for $25 I would highly reccommend an ontario rat1 or rat2. Otherwise the dozier, opinel #8, buck bantam are pretty decent for the price.

Anything in this price range is going to require frequent sharpening, as the steels are pretty basic. They will all work just fine for the task at hand, just be aware that you will need to touch up the edge after heavy use. For this reason I would pick up something with a blade shape that lends itself to quick and easy sharpening.

Kershaw 1086 Strobe Folding Knife

I thought the strobe was 8Cr13MoV. Is there multiple versions? I liked the overall design but the zytel scales were a big turn off, I'd definitely be interested in one with G10 and sandvick.

You always seem to take issue with where a knife is made. The discussion is about a knife for certain tasks, under a certain price point. The Dozier is a fine knife for the price.
