In Need of Screw Extractor

Hi guys,

Though I have good Torx wrenches from Wiha, sometimes stuff happens and I need to get some stripped screws out, usually only T6. I had purchased what I hoped was a manual set but turned out to be far too large to extract such small screws, some time ago. The DIY remedies like the rubber band trick or slightly larger regular screwdriver just haven't worked for me in the past.

Though it doesn't happen often it is annoying when it does. If someone could direct me to a sponsored link of someone who sells extractors for at least the t6, that do not need to be attached to a drill, this would be ideal. In lieu of that, some idea of at least what to look for, so I know the right thing to order when I see it, would be much appreciated. Google did return a few old threads here but they didn't seem to have the info I need.

Thanks all.

ETA: There appear to be a well-thought of set of mini pliers that seem to work with pretty much all small screws in tight or impossible situations... but without knowing if they can really get at mostly recessed T6 screws specifically, I'm wary of buying. Big box stores in my area may have what I need but I'd prefer online ordering.

They aren't a Bladeforums sponsor, but if you go to mcmaster.com and do a search for "miniature screw extractor", that might be what you're looking for.

I don't own any so I can't say for sure how or if they work on torx screws.

Thanks, friend. I'm know I'm likely to take a chance either way no matter what I'm ordering. The older threads (at least 3 or 4 years old) make suggestions of manual screw extractors, so I hope to find something that works. I asked for sponsors because I know mods prefer plugging paid advertisers.

I'm really fond of the Grab-it brand of screw extractors...I think they make one small enough for a T6.

If you are wiling to sacrifice a T6 bit, you can use PL 8X and glue the bit right into the torx screw, you have to let it set and cure completely- 24hr and they will become one.

That seems like it would work but unfortunately I'd have to buy another T6 bit just to do it, I need to extract two damaged screws, and then a third bit just to have one that would not be sacrificed. :/

Based on my experiences with screw extractors on screws larger than T6, I'm kind of loving the suggestion of gluing a bit into the screw head as a solution. Drilling the screw perfectly centered, not breaking the extractor in the screw while trying to get it out, lots to potentially go wrong... 1/4" X 1" T6 bits are widely available and inexpensive (only $1.38 each from my industrial supplier, probably less out on the web) I have also used on screws larger than T6 the trick of tapping a slightly larger Allen key into the Torx recess and then removing the screw with the Allen key or bit

Wihas are pricy, they cost about 3 times more but they are awesome, make sure you check your T6 bit condition periodically, it does wear down.

I love the 2" bits, they give you enough comfortable purchase to use without handle, I use them to reinstall screws finger tight. Here is a pic of my set up, the 2" are bought individually, T6 & T8

If they're not set with loctite, sometimes a small punch will work to get them started. Spray some penetrating oil on it and just use a hammer to tap it in a counter clockwise motion.
