In need of sheath advice.

I recently ordered my first high end knife and I'm going to need a sheath for it but I need some advice. The knife in need of pants is a Busse TGLB. I like the butt of the handle to be no higher than the top of my belt. I've never worn a big fixed blade before but I do know that with my pistol holsters I don't like wearing a leg thong. I'm not set on or againced any materials. Leather or synthetic will be fine. Something with a small pouch for a stone would be nice.

Are the "dangler" type sheaths meant to be worn with a leg tie? They look like they'd be really nice when getting in or out of a vehicle but if it were worn without a thong it seems like it would be kind of awkward drawing from a sheath that tries to come up with the knife.

Any thoughts, advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

TGLB! Congrats! Its a great all around camp knife. :)

Every "dangler" style knife I've ever made in that size has had some sort of leg tie or strap. This keeps the knife from waggling around when your moving and/or running. Dont jump without it being tied up either, that could be catastrophic.

Now, that said, a good stout low ride sheath would probably serve all your needs without the requirement of a leg tie. But at the same time, sitting with a low ride sheath can be one that requires some diligence. I tend to automatically grab the sheath and place it where I need it to, but its something I've done all my life.

Hope this helps a little, and again, congrats on the TGLB!!! Please do post pics when you get the sheath of your dreams!!! :)

I am a HUGE fan of the Dangler - but for these reasons:

I am almost always wearing a pack when I have my knife on - I can draw the knife without it interfering with the pack belt.

I don't like the knife to hang on me - it is just a comfort thing.

I don't wear a leg attachment - and I don't mind it bouncing on me.

When I sit in a seat - it can be easily adjusted.

However - a nice low rider would be GREAT.

Ok, thanks guys. Now, I kind of have an idea I've been mulling over. It may be a little strange sounding, but what about a high ride dangler? I'm thinking that if the ring were to attach further down on the sheath it would bring the butt end of the knife up a bit, and it would possibly reduce the swinging pendulum effect by putting the pivot point closer to the knifed center of balance. So it wouldn't really be a dangler that follows your leg when you kneel, but more of a drop sheath that easily pivots for getting in and out of a vehicle. What do you think?

Thinking outside the box! I like it. :) Most of Busse's knives are incredibly handle heavy, making a sheath like your thinking of prone to wanting to flip upside down. The lighter handles on the TGLB raise that balance point substantially, but its still a heavy knife.

Your best bet is to take the risk and try it out, be a guinea pig of sorts. Its a huge step as leather work is not cheap, but if it does not work, I bet that the builder can modify it to a more traditional set up for cheap or better.

If it sounds like a project any of you leathersmiths would be interested in, I'm game and I have a couple ideas I'd like to employ in the design I have in my head.
