In Praise of My Old Stuff

OK, so we are all gadgeteers to some degree or other and we are always on the lookout for new stuff, if not to buy at least to lust after. And that’s great. But this evening I got to thinking about my some of my older stuff, the stuff I have owned, carried and used for lots of years. I have – much to my surprise and through no fault of my own - reached an age where I can count ownership of some stuff in multiple decades. I still have a diver's sheath knife that I bought as a teen when I first started skin diving and Eisenhower was president. My Swiss Army Champ was a duty free present to myself at a Paris airport a couple of dozen years ago to mark my first cigarette free flight (remember when you could buy SAK's at the airport Duty Free Shops?). More recently there is this:

It is an Infinity CMG flashlight that I’ve carried on my key ring for over 15 years. It once had a lovely black anodized finish. Now it’s mostly ‘pocket polished’ steel. It is also my favorite EDC flashlight. It is bomb-proof. My pants would not fit right without the weight and bulk in my back pocket. I know there are lots of other lights out there with the latest bells ‘n whistles on ‘em, half the weight and a zillion times the light, but this one has worked for me for all these years and how many of those fancy high priced little doo-dads will be able to claim that distinction in 15 years? And 15 years from now it’ll probably work just as well – which is probably more than I’ll be able to say about me, but that’s another story. And there is more.

Anyway, I was wondering just how many of you out there have had favorite pieces on your belts, on key chains or in your packs that have done yeoman service all these years and acquired a special place. Things that you won’t trade or replace even though there are now new and “improved” replacements out there. What are you stuck on?

I have a USAF survival knife that I *ahem* "acquired" in 1968 in a far off foreign land.

It is beaten all to hell, and on its third leather sheath, but still sharpens to a shaving edge, and will take all the punishment a good camp knife should be able to take.

I have a couple of far classier fixed blades, but "Old Faithful" is always packed for bush trips.
Two thirty + y.o. Zippo lighters still live with me, despite the fact I gave up smoking 12 years ago.

I like old things for their history and familiarity.

What is often more important than having "the latest" is having an intimate knowledge of what you do have.

I've been using the same Zippo on and off since 1987. I bought it with some of my HS graduation money.
