in regards to hurricane prayers....

I would just like to note that after looking over the other site or two I keep an eye on, and spotting prayer requests for hurricane victims where replies numbered exactly one on one site and three on the other, and being one who has quite a few family and friends in and around the ground zero of this historic storm, I would just like to thank all of you who took the time from your own lives to give some thought to total strangers in harm's way.....

mtngunr, I hear you. That's what the people here are like.

Remember, though, that for every one who replies, there may be 10 who read the post, agree, but don't feel that their words will add anything of value. This may well apply to other forums as well.

On the other board or two, when someone buys a new toy or posts a pic of one, the number of "pant pant" "drool drool" replies is amazing, not to mention the replies to the "who should we hate, today?" posts...in short, most are not private individuals who are shy about expressing themselves, and I personally know a fair number of them....this is just a pat on the back for the decent folk here, as quality do tell as we say in the southland...

Point taken.

I often don't respond to the more 'serious' posts (like the one you mention) because:
1) it makes much more of a difference that something non-trivial/trite be said
2) someone else said it before/better

I expect very few replies to this post for the very reasons you mention....I even debated about posting it all for the same reasons....but in the end, thought it should be said.....Thanks again...

Can anyone tell me how its going down there? I was listening to Fox News and they were reporting flooding of 8-10 feet between Lake P (can't pronounce or spell it) and the French Quarter. I also heard that the Superdome took a hit and lost part of its roof.

Hope people are okay.

Pretty big story for a synopsis here...east NO is flooded near the industial canal, some total structure failure in the downtown, two large holes in the dome roof, over 100 EMS calls about folk trapped on roofs, many windows blown out in hotels and hospitals...Gulfport and Biloxi are shredded and flooded...downtown Mobile at Water Street is 9ft under water...in phone call to mom two large trees went down while I was talking to her, siding and shingles were blowing off the house and the house was shaking....typical hurricane experience...there will be millions of trees down across the Gulf Coast and everything along the immediate coast from Destin, FL over past NO will pretty much be wiped out by the surge.....

If I am not mistaken, it is Lake 'punch' 'ah' 'train'
At least that is how everyone in Texas says it.
And a lot of us are from LA(the state, not the city!).

It is a French word, and as anyone who has ever been to France can tell you, make no attempt to pronounce it unless you can say it like a native son, and even then, they will act like they do not understand...my kin in the area pronounce it "PONCH-ah-train".....
