In Tactical Knives: "Pathmaker" -- Al Mar Taylor Cutlery Ripoff?

There was a big article in the most recent Tactical Knives on Brigade Quatermaster's "Pathmaker." (Forgive me if this has been covered before; I almost thinkg I remember seeing something, but couldn't find it under "search.")

An ad for the Pathmaker, in the same issue of the magazine, said it was patterned after a design by Al Mar. I think I remember seeing those Al Mar knives, and the Pathmaker certainly does look like what I remember. A closeup of the blade revealed those dreaded words, "Taylor Cutlery."

My question is, does anyone know if this is a blatant ripoff by Taylor of Al Mar, facilitated by Brigade? Or would Al Mar's company have consented to such a copy? I have a hard time believing that, but since the advertisement mentioned Al Mar by name, I suppose it is possible.

Curiously,

Razor

Razor,

Nothing new here. The pathmaker has been on the market for about a decade. It is a knockoff of the Al Mar Pathfinder/Quest series. But, unlike the 1/4" thick Al Mar versions, these seem to feature 1/8" blade stock.

Al Mar's designs have generated more knockoffs than anyone I can think of.

I guess what took me aback was the fact that the ad for the Pathmaker even mentions that it's patterned after the Al Mar blade. If Al Mar didn't grant permission, that takes real...something.

While I don't know squat about the permission issue, I do know that another key difference between this remake and the original is the the remake is rumored to have a sweet blade alloy comprised of recylced aluminum cans. I think they call it AM6.

How 'bout dropping a line to Gary Fadden at AMK asking if it's a blatant rip? His website is www.almarknives.com

Professor.

There is an ad in either the current Blade or TK for the Pathmaker and Al Mar is credited as the designer. Looks to me like it's a licensed design...

I remember seeing the Pathfinder in the Cutlery Shop catalog- another distinction was the great sheath that the AM model came with.

mr44 is right.
It appears they credit Al Mar Knives for it.
If they are not paying AMK a licensing fee for it, hopefully they at least obtained AMK's permission to use the design. If they haven't, then Doom unto them.
