"In the black"?

Questions, questions.

Is there a term of art to describe leaving the sides of the blade just as they emerged from forging, tempering and heat-treating -- without any effort to polish the steel? A couple of the old Khuk's I have could hardly be called "in the white." More like "in the black."

And when that is answered . . . . .

As forged is the term you're looking for.:D

I bought a couple of "as forged" blades that I picked up at the 1st khuk khonvention. I finished one of them, the Chainpuri Blade, but still have the Hanuman to go. I broke the tang on it by pounding on it without heating it up first.
I just recently had it welded so now it's just a matter of time.
Just remember, "There's nothing new under the sun.";)

Look for the phrase "with scale from the forge" or something like that.

Yvsa, I hardly thought what I have is unique. I presume village smiths might often omit the merely cosmetic and focus on what cuts. Both of these "as forged" Khukuris cut wood (Southern Yeloow Pine) like the devil with no apparent damage to the edge. I just wondered how to described them in "Khuk Speak."

Didn't mean no offense.:)

You make me envious with two villagers in the "as forged" state!!!!:o
Would you trade one of them for and HI model?

Y, no offense imagined, much less taken. As to your querry, I've had the "kids" less than a month. Give me time to get to know them better.

The smaller is about 16" OA and weighs in at a petite 445 gr. It looks (Pardon my presumption!) like a small Sirupate type with a shallow fuller running the entire length of the blade. 1 & 9/16" wide at sweet spot. Blind tang. Steel bolster ("guard"). Seems ideal for backpacking. Smelly dap!! (per my earlier posts).

No. 2 is a more robust 18.25" OA and 580 gr. 2" wide at sweet spot. Also blind tang and steel bolster. Much rougher forging; yet, like No. 1, has scroll work at top of first half of blade. Wood handle almost black from use. Came w/ Karda w/ 5" blade and all steel chakma. Also tinder pouch in flap pocket in dap.

I ended up with them because no one else was really interested. "Too crude." On the contrary, they are elegant for their purpose. They cut. Besides, I love "old stuff."

Works for me Thomas.:)

I'm assumeing you're in the states. I don't know what the postage fees would be out of the country, but that may be prohibitive to me.:(
Canada might be alright though. I would just have to make inquiry.
And for No.2 I would probably sacrifice to be able to make a trade.:D
I understand that if one declares a package to be a gift that there's no or little tax fees on it?

Thomas if you do decide you would like a trade my preference would be the more robust model. I didn't convert the weight into pounds, but IIRC 580 gr is around a pound?
My e-mail is active so please don't hesitate to write if and when you decide!!!!:D

I Love Old Stuff too!!!! Another reason I was never interested in a younger trophy wife.;)
Besides I could never find one more beautiful than my Barbie anyway.:D
