I probably couldn't design a spork correctly, much less a knife, but I know what I like. There seem to be some holes in the marketplace that should be filled. Here's my ideas. Feel free to add yours.

1. Somebody please produce a knife based on the one from the first Mission Impossible movie. I know it was computer generated and/or some sort of unreleased Boker, but come on, we all want one! It was cool. It was the only knife I've ever seen that looked good even when someone dropped it.

2. You're gonna hate me for saying this, but I'd like a folding knife that sharpens itsself. I think I had a kitchen knife that did that, it had a special sharpener/sheaf and it didn't work all that well, buit I hate sharpening knives. If all I had to do was open and close my knife a few times to sharpen it, that would be ok. Sometimes I sit around openning and closing it for no reason at all. Maybe I should start smoking again so I have something to do when I'm figety.

3. Some sort of knife that is legal virtually everywhere but is still functional, has decent steel, looks good, etc. That's probably hopeless. I had to turn in my Leatherman at some government building in the states and that was before 9/11.

4. I know most people don't need bottle openners any more but if a bottle openner was somehow incorporated into the handle of a knife, it would be appreciated. I know there a bottle openner on my SAK and on my Leatherman, but I just want a bottle openner and a knife on the same utensil.

check out the Becker Necker.

I love the traditional trapper pattern. I wish that someone would make a fairly large trapper (3.5 to 4 inch blades) with a straight-edge clip point blade and a serrated spey. This would totally solve the plain edge/serrated dilemma without resorting to the atrocious partially serrated blade.

If they would put an opening stud on the outside of each blade, so much the better.

There are, of course, way too many places where we are no longer permitted to carry any knife. However, Spyderco did a great job of addressing your concerns with the Pride. It's a slip-joint with a short blade that should be legal anywhere you can carry. It is also a very well-designed and well-made knife.

Right. The Pride does come closest to being the "everywhere" knife. I heard it was going to be sold at airports, hence the national and international flags on the handle. Good idea, or it was four years ago.

Mike, did you ever look at a Buck Crosslock? It's not a trapper - I think it's a KIt Carson design - but they did make one with one plain edged drop point and one serrated wharnecliff-ish blade. Two thumbstuds, two locking liners, pocket clip.

I gave away my single blade TiNi Crosslock, keep thinking about a double, although rather than the serrated I'd probably get one of the "it's not a prybar" prybar tools as the second blade. I'm a blade abusing type.
