Once I started looking I realized their were several models. Edge Pro Apex 2, 3 and 4 and the Edge Pro Professional 1, 2, 3 and 4. Is the EP Professional significantly better than the EP Apex? Is their one to stay away from or one to lean towards? Any helpful info is appreciated.
Thanks, David

I've looked into them quite a few times & found a lot of helpful info here & on YouTube as well. If you haven't looked them up on YouTube yet id give it a try.

you could save some $! take a look at the edge pro copy,i have had mine about six months and vary happy with it,although i did replace the kit-stones that came with it and got the real EP stones as they fit in the same way,but preform much better,i couldn't see spending $200. when i could get a real nice spyderco knife instead!:D

I know people get god edges on the edge pro. No doubt, but it takes practice to get exact results. The wicked edge is a better system but quite a bit more expensive. There are two other systems that will also work well. One cheaper than all the rest. The Lansky/Smith system works well with all the stones and careful planning to repeat the steps and setup process. Recently I've come across the KME which is a fixed knife system like the Wicked Edge and Lansky. However it's much better than the Lansky and cheaper the Wicked Edge. It comes with a great array of stones and strops. For $205 you can get mirror edges off the bat. For not much more you can get as good results as any knife sharpener on the market. Check it out. I've got one coming but don't forget to check out the Lansky. It's very capable.

I'll attempt to answer the OP's quesiton.

Edge Pro Inc. has said they ask people if you intend to sharpen knives professionally, 8 hrs. per day. If so, get the Professional model. If not, get the Apex. I would recommend the combination that includes the 120, 220, 320 or 400, and 1000. If you go with the Apex kit 1, you'll need the other stones soon and pay more to get them.

As far as the "clones" or "fakes," I have one and it's not nearly as good as the real thing. The fake has a lot of movement in the upright where it connects to the base and in the arm. It can produce sharp edges, but isn't great.

As far as the KME, Wicked Edge, or Lansky, those are another question (and another thread).

Hope it helps.

You should probably define which generic version you have. There are multiple versions. I've had two and neither had much play at all in the arms.

Having said that, I can pretty easily produce fantastically sharp edges with the stock stones as much as congress stones.

And when one costs 35 bucks and the other costs 200, you'd hope the 200 dollar model would be a little better. The little bit of slop, and when I say little, I mean little, doesn't affect the performance. It's more about longevity, the 200 dollar original version is built to last a decade or more whereas the generic versions are built to last several years.

Thank you sir, I wish I could have put that into words as well as you. Tim
