In the spirit of the BK-5.

I remember my first BK-5 and getting an email from Jerry Fisk. He was asking for pictures of my fur trade knives that I had found while metal detecting. Even before this contact I had noticed design similarities, more or less, to the 5 and trade knives. It turned out that Mr. Fisk studies these old knives and I believe that the five is an Ethan Becker\Fisk collaboration. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Recently The Warrior sent me another 5 to replace my last one. So in the spirit of the 5 I took it up to the Boreal forest along a major fur trade route and it tasted Tamarac and Birch. The morning that I was farting around a cinnamon blackie was sighted were I was, and there were multiple sightings of other bears. Seeing that I have zero desire to play with spring bear cubs while momma watches, I used discretion. I found a few trade rings from the 1780's etc. It was a nice weekend visiting old friends.

This is so very cool! Thank you very much for sharing. I could only imagine finding treasures like that. I too believe the 5 to be heavily influenced by "trade knives." It is one of the reasons I like it so very much. Its a modern take on a traditional design, and well it just works. If I remember correctly from some threads on the subject the creation of the 5 is a pretty "interesting" subject/story to say the least. Either way, I am very happy and thankful that Jerry Fisk, Ethan Becker, and most recently the folks at KA-BAR have brought us such a knife. It really is a pleasure to use. My 5 probably sees daily use from the kitchen, around the home, and outdoor chores because it is just such a useful cutter. Its a big knife that to me does not have some of the drawbacks that a "big" knife can have, if that makes sense. Very well thought out.
Upnorth thanks again for the thread!

Great pics!

That's correct. Here is a video of Ethan and Jerry discussing it:

Awesome stuff man. Glad you're enjoying the 5. I need to get my metal detector back out. Lot of fun.

Really awesome stuff! I'd be very interested in seeing some pics of the old trade knives you found while metal detecting. Could you share some of 'em? Thanks!

I like it on many levels and a few of them are that it is a really big knife, with very little weight.

Sorry, I dumped them (pics) and it's less hassle to just hit the net. Look at the English versions. There was the French and English style knife.
