I know a lot of you find these "In the Works" posts interesting and hawks right now seem to be a "hot" topic so here goes......
Mark Williams of Williams Forge and I are doing this as a UBF collaboration piece. Mark sent me this pipehawk head and handle a while back and I just got it hafted. The handle is tigerstripe/curly maple which was "stained" using the traditional 18th/19th century Aqua Fortis reagent method and is the process of being finished with a traditional homemade linseed oil/varnish formula ala expert Eric Kettenburg. It has a brass mouth piece and the brass sheet in the picture is intended for an end cap and a collar just below the head. The rest of the items shown will be used as decoration on the haft......What will those be? Well ya'll will just have to check back and see :D Progress reports will be forthcoming
The head was hand forged by Mark from one piece, including the bowl. Steel is 5160 (yes Peter Mark used the "king" of steels ;) ). It has been decorated with period style filework and was then etched to give it an aged patina.

WoW!!!

Holy smokes Chuck, You sure do know how to complement a design my Friend. I'll be glued to the computer waiting to see how this turns out. Your filework kick's it up just right. Tell Linda to get them bead fingers a smokin' :) . Hey linda. Just kidding You take your time sweetie. Chuck, I think the dagger will be a heck of nice piece to go with it.

I told you last weekend that I smelled big things for you two. Beautiful work Mark. Now Chuck will take it over the top.

Im impressed! This is going to be an awesome combination. Cant wait to see it finished!

Looks great and I can't wait to see the finished product.

Just a question Mark, did you turn the bowl seperatly or is it one piece with the hawk head?

Hey Will it's all one piece. I had a fun time trying not to bash the bowl all up while forging the blade.

Thanks guys - hope you can tell I'm having FUN!! :p :D  :p :D

Been a bit burnt out on making gun rigs lately, but this has given me some new incentive and energy.

Phase II is finished - see it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304949

(Phase III should get done tonight or tomorrow and Linda is working her poor fingers to the bone getting the beading done for Phase IV)
