...sort of. I completed a little project knife from atlanta cutlery. since i was so good at this(try not to laugh) I cgot a little cocky, ordered a blade blank. Now i didnt have the handle material i wanted so i just thought i would trim away the excess from the tang and make it usable with the jatoba stock i have. What a friggin nightmare! Apparently the tangs on these blanks are treated the same as the blade ..it was tough, went through 4 hacksaw blades and 2 hours of work. Im through now, am just about to finish the brass guard and attatch the handle. Next time im going to A. order a different type of blade to work with B. Not try to mess with the tang style C. Last but not least im going to ask direction of someone more knowledgeable than myself(shouldnt take much) before trying anything like that again. Ill let you know how it works out, unless it makes me too mad and i throw it out the window.

Dude: Alot of us have been there.   I usually stick mine in the ceiling, sometime on the first throw.:D :D

hahahaha swede been there, done that.

Option A:

Won't work out - all the full tang blade blanks I know of are completely hardened (differential hardeneding is a custom deal and the tang is still harder than you want).

Option B:

Your best bet

Option C:

You can switch to shaping with an angle grinder or belt grinder with ceramic belts. I can shape a tang with either. A bench grinder should also work, but those things scare me. (There was this grinding incident involving my garage chicken, a screwdriver, and 4 loose bolts ... I don't want to think about it.)

Hope that helps,

Steve

See how much trouble i couldve saved myself. Anyway im going to try and finish it out. I have a guard and pommel ordered and hope to have it finished sometime next week. Ill post some pics if theyre presentable, otherwise ill let it die without another word. Im going to buy a lpg forge, and hopefully i wont burn down anything important. never fear im going to read up on some things before i get too carried away. I can easily see how a person can get addicted to making these things.

Now all i need is a little knowledge and ill be dangerous, well, more dangerous i guess.

My wife calls everthing else I do a hobby. My knifemaking she calls an obsession. Go figure? POOL

Well i already bought a little band saw and a drill press, and im ordering a small propane forge next week, so i guess a belt grinder wont be far in the future. I tell you what im having a belly full of file work on this one lol. Wish id listened and just put it together like it shouldve been . Oh well think of all the fun were having. If anyone has any suggestions on what things i might need, odds and ends youve found to be handy please share them with me,for the most part im just going to jump in as it were.. see what happens.

Filed down the tang and fitted the brass guard, only to use too thick a diameter of sloder, got the blade too hot and discolored it. Guess its as good as scrap now. If anything can be done that you guys know of let me know. Im still going to put on a handle and stuff just for the practice, since i dont have any more blades to work with right now.
