Taken into consideration: craftsmanship, durability, strength, finish, fit and execution by maker….

Thanks in advance.

Considering the extraordinary level at which we are seeing both forged and stockremoval knives being created today, it would be a counter productive in my opinion to only identify a few.

Threads like this invariably devolve into everyone naming their favourite maker / best buddy. There are makers in any given genre that are widely regarded as among "the best" - but you're not going to get absolute consensus, or likely anything close to it.

All of which is a long way of saying that you have to figure out who you think the "best" makers are for yourself, based on the criteria that matter most to you.

I used to think I could answer that question. Now I see knives at every show that blow me away by people I have never heard of. It is so easy to get popularity confused with quality.

That is an impossible question to answer! There are so many incredible makers out there.

Gunnie,

Once upon a time, you question would have elicited interesting commentary and differing opinions. Now however, the best that can be mustered on Bladeforums are politically correct mumblings. zzzzzzzzz Boring as all heck, imho!

I suggest performing a search. The archives contain what you are looking for.

Kumbaya!

Well said!

Back in the day, It was a very easy question to answer. There were so few. ( 60's- early 70's). The book was very thin. RW "Bob" Loveless, Bill Scagle, George Herron, Lile, Moran, J. Nelson Cooper, Jim Small, Rod Chappel, Loyd Hale, Jess Horn, Ron Lake, D.E. Henry.I was fortunate enough to know most of these makers. We have lost most of them. Each and every one of their work was instantly recognizable from across the isle. One didn't need to read the Logo on the blade to know exactly who's work one was viewing.

Today It takes a fork lift just to move the book around!

Who would ever have thought it would come to what it is today!:)

I'm Love'n It!

LOL! Glad to see you are still alive. ;)

I was beginning to think that the Pod people had replaced you.

The List: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477627

It is a year old, but I wouldn't change much.

Gunnie,

Keep in mind that this is specific to forged blades...if you want stock removal included, we might be able to get a new list going, but ....be forewarned, many, many on that list will just not be gettable at any reasonable price, and that is a major delineation between forged and stock removal.

The boys paying mucho dolares for knives have just not gotten hip to the possibilities and production of the great smiths, thank goodness!!!

Best Regards,
