Inadvertently? A sharpening enlightenment?

I just today discovered something that I have been inadvertently doing. See definition of inadvertently from Dictionary.com.

inadvertently:

Inadvertent \In`ad*vert"ent\, a. [Cf. F. inadvertant. See 2d In-, and Advert.] Not turning the mind to a matter; heedless; careless; negligent; inattentive.

Today I was sharpening up a couple of my BirGorka Villagers in order to go and gather some willow for a new ceremonial altar and discovered something that I've been doing inadvertently while stropping my knives.:o (Notice, all convex edges are sharpened the same way no matter what kind of knife it is and almost all, if not all, of my knives have a convex edge if not a convex edge bevel.)

For some reason it dawned on me today that I increase the angle when I final strop the edge on my knives.
See below for more and detailed instruction.;)

After I had finished the first khuk and went to the strop for the final edge I stopped before the last few runs across the edge and tried it to see if it would shave. It didn't.
Then I made a couple of passes each way at a little greater angle and tried it, still no shave.
At that time I thought, maybe a little more angle, as I usually do.
And so I tried a couple of more passes at a little more angle and Viola!!!!
It shaved like a monster eating hair eater!!!!:D

I don't know what made me notice something that I almost inadvertently do on my final strop and it may be, Just May Be what you guys haven't been doing and didn't know to do because you take things so literally from what I say?!?!?!?

So how about it? How about a couple of you guys try this and get back to me to see if there wasn't a hidden shaving edge on your knive's all the time!?!?!?!?!

Oh yeah.
After I started being advert:) I did notice something that I had already told you fellers and that was I did the last couple of strops lighter than the other strokes, just in case you had forgotten that.;)

Yvsa, this is what I mean when I said there was a fine line visible on the end of the edge. Yes, I sometimes increase the angle during the last sharpening step with a steel. I put the bite on it.

munk

I have found that when sharpening them (I don't use a strop) to keep the convex edge you have to maintain the angle, it is pretty steep.

That way with just a few passes with my one of my ceramic rods (Using like a steel) from my sharpmaker (The white ones) I can get a hair shaving edge very easy and very fast.

:D

It's true. A steeper angle seems to work. One pass with the strop and my convex edged AK slices paper where before it would only tear. I'll refine the edge a little and see what happens :)

I tried to slice paper with the blade at 45 degrees to the edge of the paper. The edge won't even grab the paper. However, the blade will slice if it's perpendicular. Is it my sharpening or is this a "feature" of a convex edge?

Using a slack belt for a final strop should give the same results.
