Well I was out and about today with my family, and stopped in some health food store (Whole Earth or something, I'll ask SWMBO). While there I bought something that I thought I'd read Rusty commenting on: Blue box white label with red print.

The box says Saibaba Nag in all caps on the box.

The label is "satya sai baba"
Nag Champa
Agarbatti
Mfrs Shrinivas Surgandalaya

There is a round sticker with Export Quality on it as well.

Did I get the good stuff?

Edited to add SWMBO says that the store was named "Wild Oats" and called me a Dummy :(

Anyway I just wanted to share real smoke, as well as spiritual smoke as well.

I've got the same box right next to me, and am very happy. Personally my absolute favorite.

I love the Nag Champa. Methinks you did just fine. :)

Nam

That is Nag Champa. Just opened one - still almost full, with 4 boxes left until I need to open the 12 box case I just got Wednesday.

.........................................................................................................

There's another maybe someone can help me with?

Green box, mostly red or white letters,

ARAVINDA (red)

Sugandha Srinagar (white)

AGARBATHI

on one box face.

On edge of box it says ARAVINDA PARIMALA WORKS, MYSORE

......................................................................................................

Can someone tell me the difference between Nag Champa and the green box?

Are they for different purposes or 6 of one half a dozen of the other?

I haven't lit one yet, they are pretty aromatic still in the box!

Rusty, you said "purposes" I thought the purpose was to smell good and send up prayers???

What else am I missing?

damifino

It just stands to reason some would be prepared for use in different circumstances.

One to help in meditation, one for helping prayers reach their goal, one for medicinal type purposes - etc.

There is an Indian grocery 3 blocks down from my office and they have various indian incense and I like it better than any I have ever had before. It is various brands. The only thing close is Nag Champa.

Bruise, actually it smells pretty good still in the box, I might have to try burning some before it's over with :)

Want me to buy you a box and send it to to ya?

Thanks for the offer but I'll have to pass. I generally don't like scented things.

I did make a candle out of some bacon fat and some string once. Unfortunately my line of meat aromatherapy candles didn't sell very well. Shelf life wasn't too good either as they went rancid after a couple of weeks. :(

Gosh Bruise that is disappointing.

I can tell you that there is a difference between the Indian and the Tibetan styles of incense.

The Indian style is made with the herbs shaped around a long, thin, sliver of bamboo.

The Tibetan style is made without using bamboo. This eliminates the burned bamboo smoke and smell and leaves the air feeling a bit cleaner.

Does anyone know the reasons for burning incense or which is appropriate for what purpose?

And just what is the stuff described in the green and red box above?

TIBETAN INCENSE :
The ancient art of making Tibetan incense is the traditional masala method in which natural resins, flowers, spices, aromatic and medicinal herbs are blended with the natural glue to create these bamboo-less stick incense in accordance with the oldest Buddha recipes.

Tibetan aroma therapeutic incense is purely hand prepared from aromatic herbs in high altitude regions of Tibet according to fundamental principles of the ancient Tibetan traditional system of medicine that originated some 2500 years ago. This incense is totally absent of chocking and camphor smell and is non-toxic. Generally this Tibetan Incense is used for Puja offering and purification and also used as air freshener which keeps one"s surroundings flavored with a good scent.

Tibetan healing incense are made from powders of spiritual aromatic herbs & roots found in the Himalayan region. Medicinal inhalant used for relieving depression & achieving calmness. Made according to specifications set in the Tibetan medical tantra. Tibetan refugees living in India hand roll our incense sticks, in their home cottage industries, to make these wonderful fragrances. They use sandalwood, rose petals, jasmine flowers, cedar bark and numerous other ingredients to obtain these enjoyable aromas.

One of the more important element of Tibetan Incense is juniper which has a major medicinal role in the treatment of many contagious diseases.

This incense refreshes one"s mind to create activity. Relieves stress and tension and brings one into a more harmonious state of consciousness. Most effective when used while meditation, healing, studies and concentration of mind.

Naturally made Tibetan Incense also removes all impurities from one"s mind and protects one from various diseases and misfortunes. With this, the virtuous ones will experience a higher form of existence and will have all their general and specific wishes fulfilled.

Lord Buddha himself is said to have recommended that these should be burnt first thing in the morning before any other smell reaches one"s nose. The fragrance filling the air is a very auspicious offering to the three jewels.

Generally the Tibetan Incense is used for prayers and purification, but it is also used as air freshener which keeps one"s surrounding flavored with good smell. Gives self confidence, openness, compassion and works against weariness.
