After 17 years of a pack-a-day smoking habit I've decided to quit. 21 days smoke free so far. Chantix has been a great help, but what really gets me through those really tough times is a promise that I made to myself. If I make it three months (the hardest part from what I'm told) I'm gonna buy myself a purty new sebenza. God I really hope I make it, cause there is more to this deal..... if after three months, I return to smoking I have to forfeit the knife to one of my friends. His idea, not mine. He used to own one years ago, I've never even had the opportunity to pick one up. But after getting into collecting blades the sebenza has always been one of my grail-knives. Besides the math makes sene. 3 mo.@1 pack/day = $562.50!
Looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about......

Good incentive! As long as you've gone without already, you should start looking for where you want to buy that Sebenza. :)

As an ex-smoker (close to 8 years without), let some more incentive be looking forward to the day when your lung capacity is back to normal, and you're not hacking up black stuff. I knew it was probably time to quit when I'd reached that point.

If you are successful, your Sebenza will mean even more to you.

Professor.

Also a reformed X smoker and CR owner, The health benefits are amazing. You don't realize how negatively you are affected until you quit! No more colds or coughs!Bart1

Congratulations, Grimtongue!!! Looks like you'll have to change your username now :)

The worst part is definitely, definitely over. I quit for the third time, and stayed quit for good after wasting all that money for 21 years. If you've done three weeks, it's a cakewalk now and only a conscious decision to smoke again will screw it up. I kept waiting for some point (in prior, unsuccessful quit attempts) where I could 'safely' say, "all right, that's been long enough; I can have one now without endangering my self towards readdiction". That doesn't work. Don't have one single more cigarette, ever. You're a non-smoker now and non-smoker's don't smoke.

Good on ya. Make your sebenza a keeper.

Just get the goddam knife now though. Don't wait. It'll give you something to fiddle with as you adjust to more free hands time. Or, just up your jack schedule.

Keep up the good work. Perhaps you could have your knife custom engraved with your quit date, or some sort of encouragement.

I quit almost 12 years ago, and I credit the smoke-free policies of the places that I've lived. After 21 days, your nicotine cravings are psychological, since all the nicotine has left your body. The best thing you can do is remember that you are an adult and in control of your own life; if you really want to, you can always go to the store and buy a pack. I think that when you realize that you have complete freedom of choice, you can let go more easily.

Quitting is is the best long-term gift you can give yourself. A Sebenza is the second best. ;) Good luck!

Quitting is th best gift you can give to yourself, your friends and family. Good for you bro, I look forward to when you post pics of your new seb :)

Congrats on the decision. We all look forward to when you post pictures, and I say when because I have confidence you can quit. Good luck!

Thanks guys! I'm thinking just a plain seb 21, either that or the micarta, I keep flip-floping. I really like thinner knives. For example, my 710 gets way more pocket time than my Grip, so today I'm leaning towards the plain jane. Either way it will be a user, I'm not afraid to scratch my blades.
I appreciate the support/encouragement and will def post picks when the happy day arrives.

Grim,
I hope you make it. Giving up smoking was tougher than boot camp. It is a very liberating to not have cravings while being stuck in a meeting, or on a plane, or even just watching a long movie.

Grim, congratulations on a very wise decision. Your loved ones will thank you for never smoking ever again. Just never take another puff and you never will. To make it more interesting, buy whatever knife you can based upon how much you've saved on cigs at that point in time. You'll still be money ahead considering how much you'll save on medical bills eventually. Be strong.

Grim, I know how hard smoking is to quit. I watched 2 of my brothers and my dad do it. So here is what I offer you. If you can go the 3 months without smoking, and intend to stay smoke free, I will donate $50 towards your Sebenza. If you intend on getting a user, throw in some inserts with my donation to add some more grip to your new knife.

I think al3's offer is very generous, but you need to do it for yourself first. You have to feel it in every fiber of your being that you want to be healthy, that you NEED to be healthy. Just do it. You can. You will.

Al, thank you very much for your offer but I think Slatts is right, it's kinda gotta be my own thing. Plus I've never been any good at accepting things from other people, I'd rather give. That's why I love this forum though, the generosity, camaraderie and good people like you. I like the engraving idea from pvicenzi though, I'm seriously considering it.

Good luck, and best wishes for your success. Being a 20 year old who has never smoked, it's a bit of a foreign concept to me, but regardless of that, I'm confident you'll make it. So keep on keepin' on, or so they say.

Good luck with quitting smoking. It'll be the best thing you've ever done for yourself. Chantix wasn't for me... I took a different route. Snus. Hey! Whatever works. :) Here's a great site to reference if you ever need it... http://www.snuson.com
