I picked up a large finished Bowie at the last gun show with about a 13" blade about 2" deep with gorgeous pattern for only $50 with more available. My guess is that foreign sources are producing the blades very cheaply. The patterns are superb, but what about the quality of the metal? Any comments?

Pictures always help. Are you sure it is even Damascus and not an acid etched pattern? I have been getting a lot of emails from Pakistan, India and China for cheap pre-made Damascus Blades. One had a Bowie blade for like $10. The materials in these are of questionable quality but unless we actually put them to the test it will be hard to say if they are any good.

I'm with Chuck. Likely some of the Indian/Pakistani Damascus of questionable materials. Caveat Emptor! You get what you pay for...

I see you live in Oregon Did you get it from Ray Carpenter at the Portland gun show sound right up his alley.

No, it was from a Nevada maker. The pattern was real and quite beautiful. The quality of the steel I don't know. I resold almost immediately. I don't normally make the Portland gun show as I don't have the required percentage of beanie babies to qualify to be a dealer at that show.

What was the maker's name? I know of no US maker who would sell a large, finished
damascus blade blank that cheap.

That was my thought also , but he would not sell it that cheap , it would be a give away flag .
watch for him at the OKCA show .

It wasn't a blank, but a finished knife with decent handle material. I don't want the guy disparaged as he was nice and helpful in giving suggestions on where to get certain handle material and names of suppliers, treaters, etc. Next time, I'll keep one longer so it can be better analysed. What tests would you put it under (hardness test? Brinell or?)?
Pete

$50 per inch is a pretty fair price for quality Damascus. And that's all I have to say about that.

$50.00 damascus bowie blank? Uh?uh? Yeppers pakistan or india they should lable it,
"made proudly from pop cans and sunkin barge steel!!!"
the pop cans are the 15n20 "nickle" its shiney!

He might have a pic from when it was for sale? I don't think anyone should be dogging it until they know more details. Probably an import blade, but who knows? Why not ask the guy who it was bought from?

He bought it at a gun show. I would assume he looked at the knife, and not a picture of the knife when he purchased it.

I agree about possibly getting a picture from the seller though.

He sold the knife... I'm guessing there's at least a possibility that he took a picture of it to sell, not that he bought it based on a picture. Every knife I've ever sold or given away has a photo of it somewhere, even if it never made it online.

As far as asking the original seller, I meant more along the lines of asking about the materials.
