sure there has been 1000 of these threads.(I fail at searching these forums)

I've been seriously looking into getting an ESEE 3 or 4. Can't decide which one to get. I am looking for an EDC to add to my collection. Weight doesn't bother me and both Knives are legal.

two questions
Will the added thickness of the 4 be noticeable.
and are both handles the same size.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I have both - originally I got the 3 and I was kind of surprised how small it is. Great little knife but smaller than I really wanted. PT is right - you will notice the extra thickness...

So I got the 4 and added the longer aftermarket handles to it... its a really nice knife, its my favourite actually. Just be aware the handle is a bit on the small side so if you have big hands you might want to look into that.

I would almost guarantee that if you buy the 3 first you will end up with both... if you buy the 4 first maybe not????

Good luck.

Oh and not sure if its a factor for you but I prefer the kydex sheath that comes with the 4

My pleasure mate - fyi I got both my ESEE's from Howes Knifes - Jim Howe is a good operator.

:thumbup:Thumbs up to Jim. I have bought several knives from him and he is a stand up guy.

You bet. Jim's a great guy. What the heck ; get the 4 now and the 3 later !
I have the 4 in grey and one in Desert tan. I prefer the grey micarta myself. Grip is not an issue with either.

Personally I EDC the ESEE-4 with Dale's Scales from The Knife Connection. The 4 is just the perfect knife for so many tasks. It'll do you good at home, at work, in the kitchen, or in the woods. But it is kinda big-ish and some people will look at you weird (so I carry a Delica 4 or an Izy in case the 4 may be inappropriate.)

God Bless,
Adam

These guys have pretty much nailed it as usual, but I'll add in my 2 cents.

I'd get the 4 in cases where you think you might need the extra thickness. Otherwise the 3 is a little slicing machine.

Don't feel bad, you're one step ahead of me. There is no way we can tell you 100% what is best for you. When I originally ordered after do lots of research, I ordered both the 3 and 4 and decided which ever worked best for me, I'd keep and send the other back and eat the shipping or restocking fee. Of course at that time my logic was "Well if I have a 4 I won't need a 3 later." Yeah, good luck with that. :D

I find the length of the 3 to be enough for most utility purposes and the thinner stock performs a fair bit better for most slicing tasks, as well as carrying a bit more inconspicuously.

Looking at the two, I want to like the 4 more, but in use, i keep going back to the 3
