Hi I m a new member and like to thank all you people for lot's of info and nice stuff on this forum  As i'm not an expert on knives:
'Bout 30 years ago my father gave me this little knive when i joined the seascouts.
(hope this link works if not
i need another webspace:grumpy: )
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Album=DDPLFHFT
I tried sharpening it on a spyderco 204 set
As it is abused alot in my childhood I kept it for sentimental reasons :D .
I cannot get it sharp first i tried an 40 angle then a 30 angle i passed about 50 times each side on the grey stones... After that i thought:
I need to get a lot of material off the blade to set a bevel.
Maybe i should get the diamond rods or a DMT Xcoarse stone
I also suspect that the blade was original sharpened in convex grind

the knive has deerbone handle, copper guard and plates between the black an d maroon stuff and as i recall an icon on the blade shaped like a old fashioned chissel or stamp for drying inc on paper.

Someone can help out this not so old cheesehead from the netherlands ???

Remember: Salami i"like'm .... but not the other stuff:cool:

These knives are ground fairly thin. A 15-20 degree bevel (per side) should work nicely. Use a maker on the edge to see if you are actually removing metal in the right place-at the very edge. If you are, then try using lighter strokes.

It is likely the edge just needs to be significantly thinned, you can expect to maybe spend a few minutes with a coarse stone before the bevels meet cleanly. Generally on the older carbon steel knives you don't need diamond hones, a simple oil/waterstone works fine.
