Indentifying knives in an inherited collection

Hello,
I am starting the process of identifying and cataloging my late father’s knife collection. Is there any place specific you recommend searching (currently starting with Google). For example right now I am looking at a Buck Maverick Model 704 - which would seem simple. But all the images I find online have Buck on the handle mine says Magna.
I don’t want to flood your forum with what could be considered silly questions, yet I know his collection spans inexpensive mass produced pieces to unique Artisan pieces, so I just want to make I’m not overvaluing or under valuing them.

Thanks so much,
Nancy
(who should have paid more attention to my father 😁)

Welcome to Bladeforums NancyA.

You can post them here in this thread. There are people here (like myself) who enjoy the challenge of identifying mystery knives.

My advice is to post group shots of the knives, several in each picture, but close enough that we can get a good look at them. If we see anything of special note, or if we need better/closer pics of a particular knife, we can ask. Any markings/writing on the knives can also be a big help in identifying them.

At your membership level you would need to use a photo hosting site like Imgur to post pictures.

Also, you need to be a Gold (paying) member or higher to ask for the value of your fathers knives on this forum. Another benefit of a Gold membership is that you can post pictures directly from your computer (no need to use a hosting site).

But even though we can't tell you the value of your knives without a Gold membership, we can tell you if something you have is "extra special" and worth more investigation.

If you want to learn more about becoming a Gold member, click on "Paid Subscriptions" in the dark blue strip across the top of the screen.

But you don't need to be a Gold member, or pay anything to post pictures and ask what you've got. :)

Post a picture of the knives, either separately or in a group, with enough space between them.

From there, we can click on them and do a Google search. That will help narrow it down to a specific model.

Sorry for your loss.

the Buck 704 is a slip joint traditional folding knife. there was almost a 877 called also a maverick that was a fixed blade and a budget box store seller. both discontinued.

sticking with the 704 side of the name......Buck would do private label runs for companies in the past. magna might he some company name or whatever?

This Buck 704 has an X after the model number on the tang stamp that indicates it was made in 1990. I agree with jbmonkey that it's a special run made for some company/advertising.

It's hard to see, but it is an X.

Here's another. Can't read the tang stamp though.

Good luck with it. I hope it's enjoyable rather than sad or tedious. I'm sure a lot of smart knife people will help.
