Indiana Jones Bag Leather Strap Smells!

I just retired my 61 year old bag for a new replacement from What Price Glory. The bag is wonderful. The leather strap, actually smells so bad that it can choke you!
I don't want to send the bag back, not cost effective with two way shipping. I'm not handy enough to make a strap. I need a "magic potion" that takes the horrible odor out of probably urine cured leather from Pakistan.
Has anyone had this problem with leather and has a simple solution? How about a solution-period!
Please let me hear from you with your ideas. I've posted this same question on three different forums. The best answer so far is soak it in baking soda 2 or 3 times and let dry in the shade. I'm afraid to do this. Other ideas?
Thanks,
Prof. Ed

Slather it in wet baking soda.

When I worked in sewage treatment, there were a few magic odor killers. One is called "Odor Gone: Industrial" from

Odorgone
45 Dead Eye Run
Swampscot, MA 01907
781/593/7658

It is a hand pumped spray bottle, and works pretty well.

... wait, that address is just for one distributor.

the manufacturer is

OG Industries, listed only as Coplay, PA with a phone # of 800-930-9187

Have you tried taking it to a drycleaner's shop, and asking what they can do?

No, haven't tried a dry cleaners, but I am reminded that I have an odor control liquid somewhere downstairs. I'll see if I can find it and try it on a corner of the strap.
Thanks.

You might want to go to your local pet-supply store and pick up a spray bottle of cat urine smell remover. That stuff works pretty well.

You could pee on it, y'know cause your own urine doesn't smell so bad.

Good Evening All-

Get some matching belts, heavy-duty thread, and needles handy and then build your own strap. A shoemaker should be able to help you.

After more than a half-century, you owe yourself a new bag. Stuff this one with dried flowers and make it into a piece of artwork.

That smell is ACTUALLY Pakistani camel PISS! That's what they use for tanning leather. DO NOT ask me how I know that:rolleyes: !

Good Evening All-

Stinky, urine-tanned leather goods? This thread is getting ridiculous. There are few leather bags/garments/accessories worth this much trouble. Toss the smelly leather into the flames at your next bonfire or backyard barbecue and start with something new. Sheesh.

The thought has entered my mind, yet the EPA may pay a visit for polluting the neighborhood without first presentimg an Envoronmental Impact Statement:)

Here here! :D

In all sincerity. One of the suggestions I got from my "forum" buddies seems to have eliminated or controlled the "stink" problem. Re: commercial grade odor remover.
The strap is drying now.So one man's silly problems can be solved by another man's concern for his fellow man's problem.
Thus, I thank the MAN that helped. I also thank the rest of you guys for your humorous suggestions:)I needed a laugh in between choking and sneezing!

Rub the affected area with food-grade oil mixed with a few drops of Liquid Smoke, assuming you don't mind a smoky smell.

Repeat every day until odor is gone.

Prof. Ed,

I'm sorry to hear about the strap on your new MKVII repro. bag having a bad odor. I know of several folks that own this same bag and I have not heard this complaint. You could try covering it in ground coffee over night and see if the grounds soak up the odor.

However, I recommend spending an extra thirty bucks and getting a bag strap from Adventure-Supply(scroll to the bottom). It's run by a man named Lee Keppler and the bag strap he sells is of much higher quality than the repro. strap. All of Lee's gear is first rate.
