Indiana Law

All right, I've heard so many different stories when it comes to this, and I just want to know the facts. Granted, this is more for my fiancee than myself, but still. I've heard that the federal law is, you can carry a knife on you if the blade is less than the length of your hand, fingers and thumb extended and joined. I've also heard that Indiana law has no length limit, as long as whatever you're carrying isn't causing a public disturbance. That's all fine and dandy, but my fiancee and I were approached by some wannabe-hard ass sheffif's officer last night at the local festival midway, who, rather rudely, told us to go put our knives in my car, or else he would detain us. I just would like to know what the ACTUAL law is, for civilians at least. I'd also love to know where he gets the balls to walk up 3 inches behind an MP in full ACUs and be as disrespectful as he was. Especially when the knife I carry, is a military weapon. But that's beside the point.

Any help would be appreciated.

As I understand it, you are right about state codes. However in Indiana, the county does have the right to inact their own interpretations of Federal and state codes. They also give school boards the same rights.
As for the wannabe sheriff unpaid trainee, he was just jealous because he doesn't have the balls or strength of conviction to serve his country.
Thank you for serving.

Malkavian: Thank you for your service. ( and the fact that you have earned the right, through service, to carry that edged weapon is not " besides the point" in my book ).

Cannot shed much light on your question, but when I was in Washington D.C. there was a sign banning any pocketknives with a 3 inch or above blade length. I did not go inside for fear they would confiscate my Spyderco Delica. hehehe It's almost comical in that it seems I have not earned the right to carry a 3 inch pocketknife after years of honest labor in drug stores, cornfields, banks, and the U.S. Postal Service ( 21 years ). The governor of Kentucky has honored me with a commision in the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels ( for service to the community ). I just better watch that 3 inch pocketknife :) Sorry for the rant, but it is kinda silly. Take care, Rob

Just spoke to the head of the Fort Wayne Indiana State Police post and he said there is no blade length limit and no laws concerning concealed or open carry for the state. The only laws he said the state has on the books is the "No Auto" law which can be found by Googling "Indiana Knife Laws". He also said it is possible for a city or county to enact thier own local knife restrictions, but he was not aware of any.

WhitleyStu: Thanks for the update. I wonder what his personal opinion is of the "Switchblade" law. I think it is a little out-of-date.
