I notice that many of us are mixed breeds.I am a full breed Norsky myself. My Indin name is Red Bear.In the `70`s the res was the only place that had a Warrior society.Sure, the O-Club had the combat patches, the CIB`s and the medals clanking. In a sweat lodge there is no rank, some privilige,(you can`t be rude),but it doesn`t go beyond the lodge and the society into the tribe in general. If you are interested I will tell you why the Indin`s came to me.Thanks for the word ysva.

My experiance ranges to testifing before the FERC Commission on Indin affairs and BIA to some personal realizations on the res.

ghostsix I would love to hear that story. I don't often give my name out,it is Yvsagigagei. It is both southern Cherokee slang and proper Cherokee and means Buffalo Red or Red Buffalo. It was given to me by a Cherokee Elder Grandmother. The meaning is Prarie Fire.

Rusty was right on with his post in "Monkey Business." There are many Ceremonies going on in several parts of the country now. I was able to make it to a camp in S.D.three years ago,but other things have gotten in my way since, not even considering the health aspect. I think Sundance is just starting or getting ready to start here. I am sure some of the people are already there since we haven't heard from them lately.
I was hoping to at least go support this year, but there is always next year. It is going to go to long I am afeared and that I will be to old to commit for four years of doing that.
That s another thing that will happen if it is supposed to.
Gotta go get ready now.

The civilized man sleeps behind locked doors in the city while the naked savage sleeps (with a knife) in a open hut in the jungle.

Yvsa, before you, there was no reason to mention that I am blood brother to the Shoshone and the Winnabago,(now the Ho Chunk).I`ll revisit this.I`m watching Willie Nelson.

I am not going to pierce my chest and hang by thongs until they tear out.Maybe we should keep this thread for Indin spirituality. The Sun Dance started as a buffalo thing.I doubt that the Indins here would identify, as they are not buffalo,or horse culture.

I am not going to question a fellow LEO other than improvement intent.,I`ll do it here.I thnk that the boy is wrong.I know about wrong,I was a Federal Agent.

I read Fredrick Jackson Turner`s thesis.I am the good guy whether I play cowboy or indin. My own thesis was the Rocky MT. Fur Trade between 1820 and 1840.

OK,lets see if I can remember this.Thank goodness no tendons were cut.The scars are there. This is twice that I have mixed blood with Indin Chiefs. Now they call themselves Tribal Leaders.Bull;I was there in the old days.A USA COL.has a lot of influence. The Indin`s had a cause that I supported. Before this.we drank beer and hunted together.Idaho Power wanted to put a dam on a free flowing reach of the Snake River. The Chief came to me;fine;I called the US ARMY Corps of Engineers and asked for an enviormental impact statement. This led to a Federal Energy Resources Commission hearing.I had a study done by the U of CA and testified on behalf of the tribe at the FERC hearing.Of course,I won,and the river runs free to this day.

ghostsix,

Cool, and thanks. Never been there but will someday. Nice to know parts of the river remain undamned. The unfettered flow of water is a sight to behold. Someday...

Something that I've always wanted to do since I read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. I fear I have waited too long.

Now, that's where I live, less then a two minute walk to the mighty (stinky!) Mississippi! Hmmmm....we could use my place as the launching point

BTW, my Grandmother was Cherokee, but my Grandpa was a Scottish immigrant to western Virginia. Funny how we find kindred in the oddest of places.

Ahoy, maties!

Finding kindred in strange places -- years ago I was walking around Times Square and ran into a classmate from my hometown -- Cherokee, Kansas pop. 850. -- who I'd not seen in years.

Excellent credentials ghostsix. Somehow I am not surprised.

That was a wonderful thing you did about the Snake River. I have fished and camped along it in different states many times when I was a boy.
I was in 24 states by the time I was 13 and had lived in most of them.
This was from Palm Bay FL. to within 30 miles of the Canadian border in Washington State. From south of San Diego CA to Minneapolis MN. I was in 7 schools in 7 states one school term of 9 months. That was from Fl. to MN. and I had a severe case of culture shock.

Unlike the fine people on here my old man was an outlaw and we were always on the run although being a "big ole dumb kid" I wasn't aware of many things until I was about 15 and especially about that. My old man was a first class con man. He is now (happily I hope) polluting the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It seems that the last few years for many of the Indin people and as you say "us breeds" that the Sundance has become more than it was at the beginning. It has become the ultimate form of prayer that a person can do to help his children, family, others or the world and the people in it.
There have even been some Dine' (Navajo) that have/has Danced in the last few years.

The forum members are suprising, yet not suprising.I guess it is our thing.
I am a little suprised that Navaho,Zuni or Hopi would be involved. They used to be prey.
