Does anyone use or know much about induction forges? I have been reading about induction heating and was wondering if there was a use for them in our trade. Can they be built DIY and culd they be used for forging and heat treating? Just looking for thoughts or perspective.

I actually got to play with one at the Smokey Mtn. knife Symposium (Hammer-In). It took about 2 to 3 Min's to bring a 1" x 1/4" bar of 1095 to forging temp and about 5min. to get to welding temp. I think I may still have the info. as I remember they were about $3500.00 for the machine and a couple of attachments. Seems you could make your own if you have the know-how.

there is a member who works where these are made. i have a bad memory but i have talked to him on the phone about these systems and i hope he makes a post. i know they are used in the chain making process to do the welding, hardening and tempering of the chain links so i would think you could use one as a forge. i have a friend who uses one at his work on occasioin. he told me a funny story that happened to him while checking the coil. he knew that metal ran through would get hot and you can safely pass anything non metallic through without it heating up. he somehow ended up putting his finger inside the coil but had a metal splinter he had forgotten about until it turned red hot under his skin

they are marketed from off center forge and Tom Ferry has one in use. It is a very cool machine. played with one at d lisch's hammer in a couple of years ago and at Josh smiths hammer in in 07. They are very cool but I don't believe that they would work as an only forge.
