Hey De!
The most inexpensive forge I came up with to do heat treat on simple carbon steels is use your charcoal grill in the backyard. I cracked up the coals to make them smaller heat faster and get better coverage over the blade. Take a hair dryer and use it to encrease the heat by running it over the coals.
Hope it helps.

For carbon steel? All you need is a source of heat, natural charcoal and air

You can build a forge in a hole in the ground or a box of dirt and clay.

Wayne Goddard's $50.00 Knife Shop has some good tips on setting up on the cheap.

This is definatly something you don't want to try on your own DE. I don't want you doing something that "could" get you hurt. Knife making is a VERRY dangerous affair. With you being a child you will need to have someone look over what you are doing. I can't stress that enough. It's serious buisness. Better yet don't try at all untill you get older. Look up some knife makers in your area and see if they would show you the ropes. Be honest and LISTEN to what is being taught. Gather info at every source you can.

Don't over react! He wants to heat treat a blade, not run a blast furnace.

If his parents approve and he does it out doors it is not much more dangerous than cooking on the grill. Just use the proper tools and safety equipment. And use them properly!

And KID, invite your parents to join you. A lot of parents are too busy trying to be adults to have any fun.
