I'd like to occasionally use a 20 lpi checkering file for thumb traction on my knives, but I'm not too keen on spending $60 for a Brownell's file. Anyone have a source for a cheaper version?

Howdy There....!
If you are going to the Blade Show, that is a great place to pick one up. If I recall correctly I got mine at the Koval booth for around $30 a couple years ago. Check with one the supply companys for a better price. Hope to see ya Atlanta.

If you want to check with Jantz at DAVIS, OK. ,1-800-351-8900 Their checkering file is 20/ inch item GNCF00 IS 24.95 30/INCH IS GNCFO IS 24.95 and their 40/inch is GNCF1 IS 26.95 WITH SHIPPING ADDED IS 8.95. I have used their 20/inch for over 15years and always good items and even when I used it on hardened steel stood up way longer than I thought possible. Mike

I've picked up several sets on ebay for about $20 for a set of from four to ten files.

I picked up a thread restorer file.
It has 8 different sides on it, with different threads per inch.
You can get really coarse to really fine TPI with these.
Not as good as a quality checkering file, but a lot of choices.
