Anyone know custom makers that are willing to make handmade fixed blades to the customer's specifications at low prices?

As long as the blades are on a "user" quality level (as opposed to presentation pieces/"safe queens"), perfect fit and finish are not necessarily important criteria here.

I would appreciate any examples (maybe pics?) and an approximate price point at which a knife in the same category could be purchased from that particular maker.

Just how much input are looking at having in the design of the knife? Are you wanting to make some suggestions and requests, or are you looking to have knives made that you have designed? The reason that I ask this is that I don't know very many makers that want to work from someone elses design and that will really limit the recommendations that I will be able to provide you with.

Another question that I have is, what kind of knife are you looking at having made? Without knowing that I would only be guessing whether a maker made knives in your preferred style.

Keith,

first of all, thanks for your answer.

I'm not talking about a knife in particular, but there are a couple of medium sized (about 8" OAL) fixed blade knives (most of 'em without any "bells and whistles") I designed which I would like to have made (not right now, but maybe later this year). Therefore I'm lookin' specifically for makers who would take my design pattern as a guideline rather than those who offers his own designs and will only permit the customer to choose a couple of options.
But while you're at it, maybe one of the latter might have a design which appeals to me, so please post 'em.

I think Pinoy knife could hook you up. Everyone else that I can think of starts at $300-$400.

Most of the makers I know start in the $300 + range.
From a knifemakers perspective custom designs almost always take longer to make so they cost more. If you want low price try Mineral mountain hatchet works.

The makers that I am thinking about are: Robert Hankins, Bill Siegle and Sean Kendrick. These makers offer what I consider to be low price and excellent quality. These makers would be willing to work very closely with you, but I am not sure that they would work totally to your design.

Edited to add:

Robert was posting at the same time I was and I did not see his post before submitting mine.

You might try posting at CKD Forums (www.ckdforums.com) to see if a newer knife maker might take the project on.

One guy you might check out is Jason Cutter in Australia. I purchased two of these knives from him at $160 US apiece:

His prices will go up, and his list will get long. The trick for you may be to find a good knife maker while they are still building up their skills and clientele.

That is an excellent observation. This could quite likely be your best bet.

the sword in my other post ( this post ) went for under 300 including shipping :D

Now if I were to take orders and lived in the USA..... :D

My general idea is to ask a customer excactly what he needs the knife for; then build it as good as I can. Minimalistic too, with some touches of esthetics.

But.. I stole that Idea from guys like John Greco, Bill Siegle and so on. Since I bet you're USA resident, these guys are your best shot.

Greetz and take care, Bart.

For some reason I cant email you, but I would probably be willing to take on the project. I dont forge much, but I have done about 40 stock removal knives and have sold a few. Email me with your designs, and I will see if I can do it.
