I want an extra fixed blade knife or 2 to keep in my car/truck survival pack. Prefer stainless & drop point. The 2 I identified as reasonably inexpensive are the Benchmade Rant DPT - low $40's (recommended by Doug Ritter) & the Boker Arbolito 516. Both are 440C. The Rant has a removable handle (I am a bit leary of this). The Boker has a soft rubber textured handle (is this OK?). Any comments or advice?

How thick of a blade are we looking at? Size? I think some Mora knives are worth a look. What work do you plan to do with them?

I like the Rant drop point, the arbolito 516 handle doesn't fit my hand at all, and feels........wrong. Find one that you can put a hand to before you buy one. In that price/size(admittedly smaller than the Rant, but a great performance/price ratio) range, I really like the Queen premium hunter series drop point ($39.00) in D2 (nearly stainless, and wonderful edge holding characteristics). If you wanted to spend a little more, The Ontario Rat-3 ($69.00) is one hell of a knife also. www.cumberlandknifeworks.com has both of these in stock.

cold steel master hunter in stainless(also comes in carbon.)

short ka bar usmc (but its carbon). however, it has a nice epoxy coating on it to protect the blade.

each is @ $50.

Ontario Spec Plus. US Army Quartermaster Knife under $50 and very stout. Sharpens easy.

I have a Benchmade Rant DPT knife; it is my fixed blade truck knife. I got it at a knife show for $40.

General survival use - fire making, etc. Also just cutting food for lunch if we are on a drive. My main pack knife is a Fallkniven F1. These would be cheap extras.

Is the removable handle a disadvantage? Is it really solid. Doesn't sound like something you can pound the but with like my Fallkniven F1.

How about the Spyderco Moran featherweight, IMO one of the best belt knives made. VG10, comfy handle and an awesome sheath. Not a heavy duty knife but a super cutter in a great package. Also the new BM gripstilian fbs might be worth checking out. Also I believe some of the BRKT knives would fit your specs and come in under 100 bucks.

i have a rant and love it very sharp fit my hand nice and its a fantastic looking piece, removeable handle is no problem just means you can change it when you want a new look.

Your F1 is an excellent choice

Some more

Fixed griptilian
Spyderco moran
Coldsteel master hunter
Ontario Randall TAK1
Eka W11
Helle Fjellkniven

If you want cheaper:

Coldsteel mini bushman
Frosts of sweden 7xx and 8xx series
KJ Eriksson 7xx and 5xx series

or maybe if the look don't bother you:

Eriksson mora 2000 (to keep the survival spirit :D )

All these knives ar on the more compact side, users but no prybars

If you want a massive knive at a reasonable price take a sissipuukko

We definitely agree on the F1. I just got it and have not had a chance to use it but the workmanship and design are excellent. I also ordered an S1 with it so I could choose which size I wanted with the intent of returning one. Darn - it is hard for me to consider returning the S1 since it is also a beautiful knife - it is just hard to justify owning both and they are too good to leave around in my auto survival gear. Oh Well....

I've got the Rant, and it's a sweet lil' knife. I don't think of it as a survival knife, though; it has a very thin hollow grind that, while it makes an excellent slicer, isn't exactly built for chopping or batonning.

The removable handle isn't a problem, however. It's quite sturdy, and makes the Rant easy to clean if it takes a dunk or gets goopy from dressing game.
