I considering picking up a simple enduro.

Potential contenders:

TW200
XT250
WR250L
CRF250L
KLX250
DRX250

Anyone have any experience with any of these?

I’ve calculated out that I’m going to save ALOT of gas by leaving a farm truck on the farm and commuting back and forth on a small bike.

I have several decades of riding experience ranging from big bore twins, sport bikes, mopeds, pit bikes, and quads.

I have limited experience riding motocross.

I’m looking for reliability and ease of maintenance foremost, but need to be able to haul my 240 lbs without killing the motor at 55 mph.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I only had a KLX650c as far as dual sports.

A newer KLX 250 should be much more nimble off road. Mine was geared pretty tall for technical off road. It would haul, but tight climbing it was a little fast for tight, rough trails. It paid for its self in a single riding season in gas.

I need another bike!!

You’re spot on with why I’m looking to stay small. Those KLX650 are pretty bomb proof though!

I had a TW 200, loved it for 10-40 mph on forest roads. But I wouldn’t choose it if I were commuting at highway speeds. Just my 2 cents...

Yes I agree that bike is out of its element on the highway. The highest speed limit here is 45 mph luckily.

Dialed it in to:

2020 Yamaha XT250 250
2020 Kawasaki KLX 250
2020 Yamaha WR250R

I plan to buy one end of this week.

Tough to decide...

XT250 is a tried a true Japanese design from the 80’s. Still made in Japan. Torquey air cooled, basic suspension, low seat. Super easy maintenance and family friendly.

KLX250 was military equipment at one time. Partially made is Southeast Asia. Looks the most promising in balance but has the feeling of cheaper parts. Water cooled, looks cool with digicam. A bit better suspension.

Yamaha WR250R made in Japan, but a high rev needed. Not a lot of torque, but the most quality suspension. Jumps the easiest and is closest to actual dirt bike. Costs 1600 more though.

Still not sure what I’m buying yet.

Bought the xt250.

It hopefully ships over on the barge next week.

I’ll be tracking the fuel savings and experiences of such a simple and basic bike.
