Inexpensive fighting/combat knife?

Before I start, I just want to say, that I don't buy knives with self defense in mind. With that said, I wanted to buy a fighting/combat knife just to get a feel for them (sounds odd, but I hope you know what I mean). I took a look at a Kizlyar Voron-3 (commonly used by the spetsnaz or so I am told), but I don't have $200AUD to spend on a knife right now. The only three requirements are that it should be a fixed blade, plain edged and not too expensive (below 100USD would be nice).

Thanks in advance.

How about a Ka-Bar?

Easy to find, inexpensive, and has impeccable credentials as a fighting knife.

I 2nd that. :D

It's light and fast with a good blade length.

Hmmmmm, I'll keep the Ka-Bar in mind. How would it compare to these three (as a fighting/combat knife)?
- SOG Daggert 2
- Buck Nighthawk
- Boker applegate Fairbairn

Funny, I woke up this morning thinking about the same thing; a dedicated fighting knife.

A sword would probably be ideal, but I think it'll be cumbersome when carrying a lot of other stuff.

The 7" Kabar has been a standard for a while, which seems like a good balance between reach, durablity, and for lack of a better word, agility.

But I would imagine a lot of factors like body size, strength, skills, fighting style, enviroment, preference, and so on.. would play a role in picking a knife.

Im no expert in fighting or knives, but I like the Cold Steel SRK, and will get it in the near future.

I'd stick with the Ka-Bar. Tried and true, inexpensive, great quality.
Personally, in the event of the zombie apocalypse, I'm planning to rely on my BRKT Settler as a general purpose bush knife, and I figure that it'll do nicely in the event that I need to deanimate any nasties. ;)

Ka-Bar or maybe a RC-6.

The RC-6 is probably more general purpose, but it comes with the RAT warranty.

Gotta say Ka-Bar on this.

But seriously outside military service where you might need to sink 6" inches of blade into someone, a regular blade, easily deployed, easily carried, and well fit to your hand will serve you better in a fight than a military issue fighting / utility knife.

So with that in mind, I would concider an IZULA as well.

The biggest one available. I would choose a sword over a machete, a bowie over a pocket knife. I'd want to be able to do damage from as far away as possible.

I agree. I'd want a nice long blade that was thick enough to actually use but not so heavy as to tire me quickly. I really like my bayonet, the handle just needs to be longer.

This seems ideal, Mauser bayonet. Nice long handle, good length blade.

I've never been quite sure what a "fighting" knife is, other than any knife you use in a fight. For instance, the Gerber Mark II looks badass, but I suspect that it's a lot less useful than, say, the KBAR that's been mentioned here for most uses a knife gets put through in any sort of combat zone.

My thought is that, before picking the knife, decide what style or method of knife fighting you will use and/or train in. That will often dictate the general requirments of the knife.

The KBAR is a good choice, but not because of how "deadly" it may be, but because it is also well suited to function as a general purpose utility knife.

Is this something you plan on carrying? If so, you should buy something that is legal to carry in you area -- (1) why buy a self defense knife that won't be with you all the time, and (2) if you ever have to use it, you will come out a lot better under the law if it's legal.

My two main fixed blades I carry for self defense purposes are a benchmade outbounder and a benchmade nimvarus cub (the nimvarus might be a good choice). I believe that a 4" blade will be sufficient for any sort of self defense purpose I might have.

Now, if you want something to repel the hordes of zombies breaking through the wire, get something big, badass, and swingable.

I'm not sure what the Nighthawk is, but the SOG and the Boker are both obvioulsy daggers. Daggers are made for stabbing, where the KA-Bar is more of a slashing knife. Daggers are much less useful for normal tasks that you might need a knife for, and depending on where you are illiegal in a lot of places too.
That being said, unless you really feel you need a dagger for some reason, I'd go with the KA-Bar or RAT-6.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a soldier, martial artist or world famous zombie slayer. Just a suburban desk jockey and sometimes week-end camper. That being said, my old Camillus MkII is not what I grab to check out things that go bump in the night. That honor goes to an HI khukuri or a villager grade bolo from RoA. I don't EDC them so the weight/length is not an issue. I find that weight/length comforting. Both are capable weapons with a long history of combat. They're also handy camp/yard tools. The RoA bolo is also inexpensive, $30 shipped last time I checked. I would add the machete to the list of inexpensive blades with a long history of combat. That's this armchair commando's idea of a combat knife. YMMV

I'd take the nighthawk out of those choices. It's probably the toughest of the 3 despite being stainless steel, has better cutting geometry, and one of the more comfortable handles I've used. Doesn't hurt that it's inexpensive too.
