Hi,
I work at a summer camp with kids between the ages of six and twelve. For the past nine year we've been ordering mora clippers, and recently the companion in order to supply the campers with a solid, affordable fixed blade. These are great knives for the older kids with larger hands and more experience, but a bit much for the six-eight age bracket.

My parameters are:
3" or less blade
Smallish handle
Sheath with a good detent.
Around $13 per unit. (We'd order in bulk, so hopefully some discount there.)

The woodcarving JR from Mora seems like a possibility.

Any other recommendations.

Thanks,
Adin

I like the Mora's you mentioned. Is trimming the handles down a possibility?

Maybe look into the cheap Condor neck knives. They are great for smaller hands and have no scales, just skeletonized steel. The sheathes are great also. The downside is they retail around $18 which is a bit out of your price range. Wholesale prices may be a bit lower.

Maybe Baryonyx or Condor can work with you since its a good cause. Call them both.

You could go for the wood handled Moras, and just shave down the handles a bit.

whats wrong with the moras?? they are excellent for the price, better than some $50+ knives. if you can get a deal in bulk, id say a bucklite max small, lowest i saw was $20

In your price range, I'd recommend the Ka-Bar Mini Dozier folders, 2.25" and around $15.00; and they come in several colors.

Right now the two best options are looking like the woods walker and the woodcarving JR. I considered folders, but am leaning towards fixed blades for ease of use and simplicity.

Nothing is wrong with the moras, were just looking to get a smaller option for the younger kids.

For the younger kids Mora makes knives sized for small hands with a double guard. :)

Its good to hear of a camp that gives their campers blades. Afew years ago i was working as a councilor at a camp that actually forbade all knives exept for councilors. This included the 15 year old CIT's The world is going down the drain but this actually makes me feel good.
