I am trying to find a custom maker to make a 3" BG-42 fixed blade for me. The knife does not have complicated grind lines, but I want Mr. Bos's heat treating since I heard BG42 is difficult to treat. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about the word "inexpensive", the term is hard to apply to the "custom knife" world... I know Tom Krein uses Bos heat treating. He uses S30V and CPM-154 in addition to steels like D2 and A2. It wouldn't hurt to drop him a line and ask if he'll make you one in BG-42. His knives are top quality. His e-mail address is on his site http://www.kreinknives.net/ If that address doesn't work, let me know.

I thought Bos doesn't like to heat treat BG-42 blades, because of the high soak temps the steel requires?

I didn't know about that. I remember Buck made a bunch of 110 blades out of BG-42, maybe that experience is what made him dislike it.

Even if he doesn't like to heat treat BG-42, he still does it quite well. I have a Buck in BG-42, and it is excellent, a little better than my S30V blades (one of which is also by Buck).

Oh, and Tom Mayo has Paul do his heat treating. But that probably does not meet your cost criterion.
