I've been in this frame of mind for quite some time now.. I'm not talking cheap, in the sense as some call 'beaters' I'm talking about decent quality steel, scales and hardware at an EXTREMELY affordable price that perform just as well and in some cases better then the 'expensive' stuff..

case and point: I have $6 machetes and some $100 plus, the inexpensive performs just as well as the others, may not have the great scales, and hyped steel but its heat treat is satisfactory and its performance superb. Probably cant be resold but I can customize it to perform with my liking and not worry about damaging resale to a custom..

My thoughts are leaning this way:

Although I enjoy ownership of knives that cost $400ea I simply don't enjoy them as much as lets say a $100 quality folder, and even that doesn't get as much appreciation as a $50 one..

I get more satisfaction when a cheap disposable knife performs like an animal and simply wont die..

Give me a $6 'chete, an SAK (huntsman) and a Mora and I'm set :D

of course high dollar knives are meant to be enjoyed, I just get a kick when I can get the extra mileage out of my truck, go to the $2.00 movies, buy one get one free items in life.. there's enjoyment still to be had with the American Dollar..

do you have a couple cheap favorites..??

like a Buck Vantage Pro s30v for under $60:p

Cheap favorites?

Spyderco tenacious
Buck vantage pro
Buck vantage select
Kershaw chill
Kershaw Oso sweet

The list goes on and on. I've learned not to even pay much attention to steel types when buying knives. Bucks 420hc performs VERY well, as well as kershaw and spydercos 8cr13Mov.

I am on a little cheap knife kick here lately, and I'm loving it.

People justify things in different ways.....

Personally I am not into the Wal-Mart mentality and never have been.

I don't mind paying for quality, never have.

I'm really liking this Meyerco Wharning. $32 plus shipping.

feels good doesn't it?? :)

I have a kershaw skyline my wife bought me for my bday last year and I've done unimaginable things with that $30 knife and its still kicking..

cut lead roof jacks, drywall, open cans, screw driver, cut plastic, rope, cardboard and everything between.

Cheap knives are pretty cool, but I find that they're a waste of money for me because I'll never want to carry them when I have my better knives to choose from. The Kershaw Shallot, however, has remained a great knife for me despite its low price.

Mora Clipper and Rough Rider slipjoints. Both are easily found, and won't break the bank. I like owning expensive knives, but If they break (in this case folders) or are lost, then you could be out a couple hundred dollars. If you buy a Spyderco Byrd knife and loose it, you lost maybe thirty five dollars. It is the person, though.

Maybe Walmart quality is all that some people can afford.Im sure that there are those out there that love their Vantage Select just as much as you love your..........:D

I don't mind paying for quality at all, but as a college student with no steady income - it's hard to buy expensive knives all the time.

I buy cheap folders when I get the itch for something new, but trust me I have many folders in the 150+ range.

I'll probably never stop buying cheap knives though. Especially since there are definitely some good knives that can be had for little money.

I have knives in all price ranges and enjoy them all

I pay more for the customs I own because of better Ergonomics and better heat treatment

The Boker Exskelibur and the Boker Exskelimoor are my favorite "inexpensive" knives.
Kershaw makes entirely too many offerings in this area for me to list them all.

I agree 100%. That being said, I feel like I can get a very high quality knife for little money. And that inexpensive knife will do the same things an expensive knife will, or possibly more.
Some people would prefer to own one Spyderco Military, where I would prefer to own several Cold Steel TriAd lock knives for the same money :D

Those people just need to learn to do without things they THINK they need, or learn to budget. Lets not get in to an argument here, (we can do that in PM's if you like) but I don't believe that ridiculous comments like this should go unanswered. As a habitually unemployed father of 2 , I can tell you that no one NEEDS to shop at wallmart.

That's why I said quality....

I own a bunch of different knives, from $30 to over $1,000 so as long as the quality is there it's good.

Oh I agree, nobody NEEDS to shop there, they do because they WANT to or because they think they are getting a deal or paying less.

Personally I can't stand to walk into the place, it makes me sick just to be in one.

I've always had an appreciation for knives that were relatively inexpensive but performed beyond their cost. To be honest, these types of knives are the bulk of my knife collection. Moras, Opinels, Kershaws, Bucks, SAKs, just to name a few. I would say I own less than 10 knives that would be considered higher end knives. Most of those have been purchased in the last few years. Using those "cheaper" knives that performed well has also helped me refine my tastes with regards to more expensive knife purchases.

My favorite "cheap" knives are the Kershaw RAM, Minigrip, Storm...arguably the Ripple is cheap...the old D'Allara drop point was a good deal...

nicely said :)

I never buy 'cheap' so I may pay twice.. I buy quality steel at a reasonable user cost..

fwiw I've never bought a knife at walmart.. but I've bought a ton of ammo there.....

Having worn out more cheap and sorry knives than you can imagine and not knowing the difference or having the means to get somthing better is what led me to finding the perfect tool for the job and one that outlast the sorry ones . Now I enjoy having that .

i like cheaper knives for the reasons everyone mentioned. but i'm starting to look at it in a different light....instead of spending lets say $300 total on a stash of cheap knives, i'd rather bite the bullet and buy a Sebenza or something of the like. mainly because i would still be lusting over one anyway and would be cheaper in the long run.
