It's time for me to try out some inexpensive knives that have earned a good reputation.

Opinel, Svord peasant (mini) and Aitor Castor are the first that come to mind. What else should I add to the list? I actually don't know what reputation castor knives have.

What else should I bee looking at?

Mora blades knives from Sweden, the more base Victorinox knives like the bantam and recruit.

Kastor was Camillus and many other companies, import from germany as well.
A good bet for a cheap knife in a slip joint is Rough Rider, great F and F and are razor sharp out of the box. All their slippies are under $20.00 most are under $15.00. A great way to try out different patterns at a very low price.

Best regards

Robin

Aitor Castor.

Douk-Douk.

Mercator K55.

Case sod buster jr.
Bucks import line is very good as well as bokers magnum line.

My favorites have already been suggested.
Try an okapi as well, they are neat little knives with a rich history.

Mora, Opinel, Klein- folders TL-29, hawkbill, 3 blades, 2 blades, single 2-1/4", and 3", all advertised in stainless and carbon steel.

+1 on Jerry's recommendation, especially the Imperial shell handles. Some of the best carbon steel out there.

Jerry, I've given tons of those Kabar Doziers as gifts, but not exactly traditional for this forum ;). I have handled some of those Utica rope knives before, good deal for the money.

As some have mentioned: Opinel, K55K Mercator etc etc

Oh... Rough Rider in general for the good product and the great price.

Otter Webermesser, Trattenbacher Taschenzaunkerl just to name some others ;)

The CRKT Pocket Classic knives are nice for the price. I've got their Whittler, Stockman and Congress. Inexpensive, but decent.

+1 for the Opinel and the Case Sod Buster Jr. Both are entirely no-frills, no-nonsense, meant-for-work cutting tools. No worries about scratches or scuffs. Great cutting/slicing blade profiles on each, and very easy to maintain. Both carry very light in-pocket, as well. And best of all, they're cheap (in the best possible way).

this topic pops up every so often and it is near and dear to my heart. lol

for single blades look for svord peasant (mini and regular), various models of opinel, douk douk (few different styles), eka swede 38, aitor castor (3 sizes), mercator k55k 'black cat', higonokami, sodbuster (everybody makes one), otter 'ankermesser' (theres british patterns that are pretty similar to this one) and buck 110/112 style lockbacks (everybody makes one of those, too). quite a few companies make single blade hawkbill knives that are pretty good; i have one from opinel and one from boker plus but theres loads of others.
as others have mentioned, rough rider, boker plus, boker magnum and i think robert klaas all make inexpensive yet quality knives in all sorts of patterns and they will be a good place to look for something to try without a huge cash outlay. rough rider in particular seems to have their stuff offered in a mind-boggling array of different handle covers.

I'm really interested in the K55K and the Douk Douk. I also want some Case knives, especially the trapper pattern.

+1 on Jack Black's suggestions- Meant to thank him myself, after he told me about it I got my Douke- Douke in the mail last week and I love it! Also +1 on the Dozier folders, they are amazing for the price
+1 on the Opinel as well!
