in a fight between INFI and rust, who wins? we're talking bare INFI and normal humidity conditions, here.

Hank,
INFI is horrible when it comes to rust. I used to have 5 SHSH's and now I am down to Two. Three of them rusted in my hands near the ocean and disintegrated before I could dry them off. All that was left was the micarta handles. Get rid of your INFI now, it's not worth it.

I'll trade you my Sog Seal 2000, it is fully rust proof. Good knife to. Or my Buck Intrepid which is also Rust proof. or My Katz Alley Kat.

Whooo boy!! You didnt give me the chance to grab my slop boots!!! :p Now my shoes are full of ........................... well, y'know :o

If your worried about rust or even fingerprints, dont, INFI isnt stainless but somehow its very resistant to oxidation (sp?) I have several nekkid INFI pieces and not even one spot. heck, I've had supposedly stainless blades show rust spots very quickly. And yep, I do carry that INFI in leather quite often in this hot humid area. :D

From my experience anything will rust. Well ti is pretty good about not rusting. Somewhere in the many years of the market getting flooded with super stainless and high alloyed steel knives, we've forgotten what our fathers taught us about taking care of our steel. Something as simple as wiping down your knife or putting a light coat of oil on it just doesn't happen as often as it should nowdays. Not sure if we've gotten lazy or forgetful? I'm told that INFI is pretty good about not collecting rust, even thought it's a high carbon steel. I'm sure it's a lot better than SR-101 but still I think we take for granted that it flat out will never get rusted no matter what. Coating, finishes, whether they're black, tan or DC do have other purposes besides looking cool. I still try and keep my knives clean and dry and even on occasion apply some Militec to the exposed steel. The times I haven't are the times I regret, especially if the knife sets for awhile. Then it's time to grab the steel wool and some oil and get busy removing rust spots. I think satin finish knives are the worst case when it comes to preventing rust. They look great but man do they suck when comes to holding up to rust and scratches, especially high carbon steel blades. I think this is one of the main reasons that SRKW knives mostly come with coated blades. Just my 2 cents... for whatever it's worth! :D

Well, it's not cobalt (stellite, bad joke....), but it seems to keep rust away better than most. I saw a little rust on one of mine once, and it wiped right off.

I haven't yet had rust problems with INFI, even when I lived near the seashore.

I just soaked several Ice cubes with a fair amount of Jack and Coke. I'm happy to report that it did not stay around long enough to do any damage either. :D

Hank,

I never use any oil or other type of rust preventative on any of my INFI or Modified-INFI knives, even the uncoated ones, and I have never seen any rust on them. If I use them to cut or chop something that might induce rust, I wash them with hot water and sometimes a little dish soap, rinse and wipe them off, and allow them to fully air dry before putting them away. I have even examined the uncoated edges with a magnifying glass looking for small rust spots, and have not seen any.

I bought a very well used SHSHII that I am fairly certain is INFI, and it did have some significant rust spots on the uncoated edge and especially the top/bottom of the tang. However, I was told that it was stored outside in a shelter with large temperature and humidity fluctuations, so most unprotected carbon steels would have been solid rust, and even some stainless steels would have rusted under the same conditions.

So, except for an extremely humid area, or along the sea where exposure to saltwater is possible, with minimal care rust on an INFI knife should not be a problem.

I have soaked a BM in a salt water solution ( 1tsp salt per two cups of water) and after six hours it showed slight rust which after a quick cleaning with a sorn scotchbrite pad looked like this :

INFI is way more corrosion resistant than steels like L6, 5160, O1, etc. .

How can that BM look so nice after all the hell it's been through?

No kidding..... Bad knives don't go to hell, they go to CLIFF!

LOL, good one.

Cliff has had that knife since new, right Cliff? That is simply amazing.

Yes, that knife has been in my hands before Bladeforums existed, it is the main work knife I use for most large knife work, and gets a lot of stock comparisons aside.

I thought so. Poor thing needs a retirement home. Send it to me.
