This is what happens when you get careless. Had a couple of minutes left before leaving home from work....so I decide to drill some holes on my partway done project. I normally drill on the left side of the blade so that the cutting edge is facing the opposite direction. I also normally use a makeshift L block to catch the spine in case the knife gets caught on the drill press. Figuring I only had a couple of minutes I didn't want to go through the trouble of nailing one together from scrap pieces of wood. I decided to just go ahead and drill without the L block. I was just barely getting through the first hole when the blade got caught and spun around and whacked me right on my first thumb joint. Blood started to immediately spurt out and I could see the bone and tendon movement underneath because there is not much flesh there.

It would not have been so bad if it was a regular knife. But I forgot that this was a upside down knife which means the spine is the edge!

Washed my hands and applied pressure. The bleeding slowed but still wouldn't stop. I tried to wait it out and not go to the doc but the darn thing just kept bleeding. Finally caved in and drove to the local ER to get some stitches. I now have to wear a brace to prevent my thumb from bending. I feel like such a wuss to have to go and get stitches for a little cut :o

And this is why I have Crazy Glue in the house!;)

Good to see that the only that happened was the flesh got cut bro. I gotten hit by objects caught in a drill and it freaking hurts. The edge could have chip on fractured your bone. Then you'd be wearing a cast and not just a couple of stiches.

Now suck it up and get back to grinding!:p

I'm not Amy, but here's a smooch from AZ for you, Ban! :) Just be more careful, huh guy? Your work is awesome, and we wouldn't want that to change!! Feel better!

Hahaha...crazy glue would have probably worked. I still wanted the doc to make sure that I didn't cut any nerves or tendons.

I'll get back to grinding in a couple days as soon as I can bend my thumb without bleeding ;)

Looks nasty... take it easy and heal well. I sure there are a bunch of Hogs depending your skills. :)

Thats why the first thing I do when I am doing anything like a mod to a knife, I take my ceramic stone and dull the edge. With the edge dull, I don't have to worry about any slip ups. I always resharpen the blade last when the mods are done. I too have been cut often enough that I just don't chance it anymore. It is a lot easier to resharpen the blade than to heal a bad cut! :D

All this could have been avoided if I would have just took the time to make and use that L block. The knife was not even sharpened yet. Although I did take the edge down to zero so I guess it is already sharp without sharpening.:D

Ban: You mean you didn't Rambo your own stitches? ;)

Heck NO man! I would have probably used 10 instead of 3 stitches. I have the slightest idea about stitches and would have made it worse :)

Here's to quick healing. I have always wanted to try the "super glue" method just to see how it works. I reveived 18 stitches about 6 months ago. On my leg. It hardly bled. Strange. But the Docs. sewed it up nicely and no infecton. But the scar feels sort of numb now. :D

I actually asked for the super glue option. But the doc said that it would not be a good idea because the cut was right about a joint. Any sort of movement would have easily opened it up again.

BTW, how did you get 18 stitches??? What happened?

Darwin Award time. :p. I was cutting up a ton of cardboard with a box cutter. In a rush. The blade got hung up on a piece. I muscled through it but too much. Just a stupid mistake. No more rushing for me. ;)

I had to take a guy at work to the ER for something similar. Those boxcutters leave nice and clean deep cuts :D

Dang B Tang,
Those little, "I guess I won't get it this time", or "I want do that step this time", is what will bite you everytime.
Hope that heels up soon, and you take it easy for a bit!!!!
