This is what happens when you get careless. Had a couple of minutes left before leaving home from work....so I decide to drill some holes on my partway done project. I normally drill on the left side of the blade so that the cutting edge is facing the opposite direction. I also normally use a makeshift L block to catch the spine in case the knife gets caught on the drill press. Figuring I only had a couple of minutes I didn't want to go through the trouble of nailing one together from scrap pieces of wood. I decided to just go ahead and drill without the L block. I was just barely getting through the first hole when the blade got caught and spun around and whacked me right on my first thumb joint. Blood started to immediately spurt out and I could see the bone and tendon movement underneath because there is not much flesh there.
It would not have been so bad if it was a regular knife. But I forgot that this was a upside down knife which means the spine is the edge!
Washed my hands and applied pressure. The bleeding slowed but still wouldn't stop. I tried to wait it out and not go to the doc but the darn thing just kept bleeding. Finally caved in and drove to the local ER to get some stitches. I now have to wear a brace to prevent my thumb from bending. I feel like such a wuss to have to go and get stitches for a little cut
